memorize the course...you have enough to concentrate on without thinking about getting lost on course. walk the course as many times as the time allows.

+3 for walking the course as many times as possible. Bring a hat and plenty to drink because that hot sun on the pavement while you're working the course can be murder!

You guys are wrong...Walk the course twice.

Seriously, if you can do it. Last time I walked it when I first got there, then again when my friend show up, so I kinda show him through it...I was amazed at how much it helped. I felt comfortable (one corner aside) from the start, my fastest run was actually my first.

Try to find out who the "fast guys" are in your region, and carefully study their laps when they run. I recommend even walking out around the course when the fast guys are running, or joining the course workers even if it's not your shift, if it helps give you a better vantage of a particular bit of the course you're interested in.

Look up and ahead, walk the course, turn in late, and get on the gas early!
