Autometer gauge hook up for S13 with Sr20de

I had a person give me a autometer tach. I hooked it up to the battery and then hooked the green wire to the Negative wire off the coil and it would just kinda jump a little when i touched the Green wire to the Negative wire on the coil. It wouldn't actually work.

I just wanted to know if that was the right place to hook it up and also Is there some thing i have to do to set it for the signal. I read somewhere you have to use an adapter or something to convert the 240sx signal to lower voltage.

I just need to know where to hook the green wire. I think i had it on the Neg. Coil wire it was Black with red stripe.
