I just bought a new S13 (91 this time) and unfortunately it is an automatic, but i couldn't pass up such a perfect car for only $600. This is my first time in an automatic 240sx so I don't know how many gears they have nor what their shift points are or anything like. All I know is that it has an O/D button on shifter that doesn't do ****.

When I start the car, the O/D light next to the rear wiper controls starts to blink a bunch of times and then goes away. As I accelerate it will only go into 1st, 2nd and 3rd then stop. So I am cruising around town at 40mph at 2500rpm, which seems way to high! I have tried pushing the O/D button while I am driving, but it doesn't do anything but turn on the light.

If this is a common problem it shouldn't be too hard for you guys to help me out. I am going to put it up on the lift tomorrow at work and see if anything is disconnected at the transmission, and check for power steering leaks.

I look forward to hearing your ideas,DbD

Ovewrdrive is a 4th gear, when going like 50 it should be switched already to OD. Leave the switch in and get on the highway, if it doesnt hit OD then somethings wrong.

I wasn't sure if OD was fifth gear or foirth gear.

I took it on the highway and was going 65mph at 4200rpm, still in third gear. I pushed the OD button a few times and nothing happened, it just stayed in third.

I didn't get a chance to put it on the lift so I don't know if anything is disconnected, but the last time I had it in the air I didn't see anything wrong, and it was still doing it then.

I guess this isn't a common problem?

thanks for the replies so far,DbD

If the light is off, then OD is on. you should have 4th gear.

However, the blinking OD when you turn the car on sounds like there may be a problem. I think it should flash 10 times. If they are all quick and the same length in duration its all ok. If one of those 10 flashes lasts longer than the others, then there is a problem.

That is how the automatic 300zx diag works anyhow.

When you start the car, the O/D light flashing is perfectly normal. What's not normal in your situation is the O/D not kicking in while having the button pressed in. I would check the connectors inside the shifter to make sure they're making contact with the O/D button. Also, check transmission fluid levels.

fluid levels are correct all connections are secure! I also just figured out that if i am going 50mph (for example) and come completely off the gas the transmission will shift into forth gear. I know this because I can push the o/d button and the transmission will go back into third gear, then I turn it back on and it will shift back to forth. The thing is once I get back on the gas even the slightest bit it will go back to third gear!
