1. it already has a transmission cooler from the factory2. the filter is as easy as taking off the fluid pan and there it is

BTW if this is a older car i wouldn't touch it because of the fact it was probably never changed and new fluid would kill the transmision

Change the fluid for sure! With the cost of fluid, pan gasket and filter you would be better of finding a coupon and having a shop doing it for you. I see them for about $60. The fluid/gasket/filter would cost almost that much. Then you save your self the hassle of making a big mess.

You could go to the junk yard and get a bigger trans oil cooler from a newer ford. I seen 1 on a 99 f150 that was huge. The stock 1 is integrated into the radiator .

when the radiator went out on my girls auto hatch, we put a 5spd radiator in it (easier to find) and we bought some $15 Advanced auto one. It was super easy to put on but in cold weather the car has a hard time shifting due to the trans running TOO cold...

but never had any problems.

also i've always gone with the whole if the trans hasen't been touched don't touch it.

I replaced the filter and fluid and looking at it, It didn't really need it, I figured it might since I have a small leak up near the stock cooler. Its really not that hard or messy, just nee a big catch pan.

I've never had any issues personally on my auto when changing the trans fluid and filter. When i got my daily it had a blown auto so i threw one in i had sitting that came with a motor i bought and that fluid had never been changed and i threw fresh fluid and a filter in it and it shifted perfectly. That trans had at least 150xxx and worked great til i pulled it recently.

I've also changed trans fluid on previous cars and they're all really fairly easy and simple to do.

changing fluid can be risky. as they years run up on the trans the wear on the motor can shave the gears...... changing the fluid once the fluid is beyond lube point to allow shaving......... once the shaving has occured changing the fluid reduces reliability(not kill it) because the metal shavings have built up on the gears now are being flush out.

that being said.......... auto trans are up forsale for free ALL THE TIME I would drive it till it died and then worry about it. maybe even just keep a transmission in the garage for a back up when you catch a free one for sale.
