Automatic transmission shifter sticks

1996 Maxima: When I move the shifter from drive to park the shifter sticks more then it did a month ago. The initial movement out of drive towards reverse is rather stiff and difficult. Not sure what to check. Does the shifter ever wear out? Is there an adjustment?

O.k. Man Did you try putting you foot on the break then put it in to Drive or moving the sterring wheel side to side the move it. Sometimes on my Sentra I have to wiggle it in park to start the car { OLD AGE}

1. the linkage is adjustable, its under your intake box behind the radiator...the nut could be loose.

2. check the transmission fluid level, check it when it's running b/c its an automatic.

3. apply the parking brake AT ALL TIMES, if you don't you are trying to shift the car into gear when the weight of the car is sitting on the PARK gear...not good for transmission or linkage.

This problem usually happens when shifting from Drive to park (through reverse). It's not a problem pulling out of park. I'll check the fluid level. I was not aware any adjustment on the linkage but I'll check.

Lightsout is correct. If you are parking on a hill, step on the brake,put the car in neutral, put on the emergency brake, let of the brake,then put the car in gear. That way the brakes support the weightof the car rather than the transmission.

And when u start it back up, put on the brake, put in in gear, then take off the emergency brake.

I hate hearing that "clunk" when a car is going into gear without themeasures take above
