Automatic transmision won't shift into reverse and is slipping

My transmision is slipping and when it does shift it shifts hard, even squeals the tires, then it wouldn't go into reverse, any ideas?

You need to inspect it for low fuild and any vacum leaks first.( also proper shift linkage ) Most of the time slipping occurs when the transmission OVERHEATS and burns its clutches, Is the fluid reddish and fairly clean, or is it dark brown and have a "burned almond" type of smell?
