If it has never been done before, read my lips, do not do it.

After so many tens-of-thousands of miles of not servicing the transmission, there comes a point where one should no longer think about servicing it. This mileage comes around about 60-80,000 miles. The transmission should be serviced every 30,000 miles.

If you do it without it ever having been done before, you run the possibility and risk of transmission failure. I actually just had my brother's transmission rebuilt at about 130,000 miles because he had his flushed and it failed on me. But I also know people who have had their transmission serviced without it ever being serviced past that threshold and it's still fine. So, I guess ultimately it's up to you whether or not you want to take that risk.

I have been changing my transmission fluid. That fluid has a boiling point like regular fluids. When it gets worn then you can develop issues.

I also had a BMW where I changed the transmission fluid and 3000 miles later I had to rebuild it.

Realize, its an automatic transmission. It will not last FOREVER. With 140k miles I would start saving for a raining day if it ever does fail, just in case.

Mine has 136K miles and I've had no problems to date.

the OP didnt mention a "flush".changing the fluids is fine on high mile transmission.Flushing is not recomended on a high miled trans that has never been flushed previously.Just my .02

Working at a dealer for years I can tell you that The reason many Trannys die after you perform a "flush" is user error. Many shops don't do it right, or dare I say it, dont use the right fluid. You should also refrain from using additives unless Nissan says it is ok to use. Nissan Matic J is about $10 to $15 a quart depending on where you buy it and how greedy your dealer is. But With the right machine, done right, a flush is 12 quarts and sometimes a half quart more to top it off. I flushed the fluid in my friends car at 50k and he's at 70k going strong. There is not much harm, and many techs at my shop regularly do transmission flushes at 60, 80, 100, 120k miles on whoever asks for it. No problems have come from it. So dont worry too much. If you want peace of mind, ask the dealer what they will do IF the transmission dies within a year and 12k miles after the flush.

Most dealers service the transmission at 60k. If you really want to, go ahead, but there is no harm in saving your money and waiting till 60. Nissan builds some of, if not the BEST auto trannys in the industry, the last 8 years especially. I always believed it was Toyota, but when one of my instructors from school told me it was Nissan, i asked. Apparently, after 28 years of experience rebuilding, fixing, and working on ALL trannys at a Trans shop, the technology, design, and excecution from Nissan trannys has been a step ahead of everyone else. That seems a bit irrelevant though. Back to the original thought... Its your choice buddy. At 30k, its still pretty fresh. Though I know some techs who have nissans and they flush their fluid yearly, since they have parts discounts and the flush machines in shop. In my 05 pathfinder, I flushed it at 30, and its approaching 60, so i'll be flushing it again. I flushed the fluid in my G at 45, and in my friends G at 50.

So if transmission failure is due to user error during a flush, what are the steps and processes that we should be looking for to know it is done right?

Make sure when you pay for a "flush", They dont drop the pan and then fill up with 4 more quarts when it really needs 5.75. or 5.5 or 6. Many places just assume. A Flush should be done by a machine that simultaneously removes fluid as it pours it back in. Like through the Trans cooler lines specifically. Its like sticking a machine that completes the circle of life. But its for transmission fluid. And make sure ONLY MATIC J is used.
