Good Afternoon! I own a 1977 Datsun 280Z show and go car and would like to install an automatic transmission instead of the 5 sp. that is currently in place. I would like to communicate with anyone who has accomplished this transfer. My car is currently at the restoration shop and we are searching everywhere to find out how to accomplish this. You can email me at [email protected] Thanks for the help! I've wanted to do this for some time... Peter Marcyan

Thanks for stopping in and welcome to NICO!

Is there a specific reason for wanting the change? Most people want to go the other way around.

That being said, the 280z did come with an option for the automatic transmission so I'm sure you would be able to locate a donor vehicle with a transmission intact rather easily.

Hi Peter, welcome aboard!

2 things: We'd need to know where you're located (you can update this in your profile), and you'll also want to post this in the Classic Z section of the forums.

I'll help put the word out (once we know where you're at).

Thanks!

p.s. How about some pics of the Z?

Good Morning! Thanks for your responses. I am located in Sebastian, FL for starters. There are not any donor Zs with autos that seem to be available ( I don't want a three sp.) We are probably looking to a Datsun/Nissan Maxima auto trans. from 1985-1987 (4 sp. overdrive). We've spoken to the Z Source for available support parts and right now, we just are searching for someone who has done this swapout before...we are also getting support from several privately owned trans shops who want to advise us...Pics will follow soon...

A good source to search for donor parts is www.car-part.com. Also, I'll put the word out to some friends of mine. THe parts should be simple to source, and the conversion is pretty simple.

In face, I'd bet you'll make more money selling your manual transmission and clutch pedal assembly than the auto trans swap will cost. :)

Thanks for the info! Yes, I am sure to make money on the "like new" 5 sp. trans, dual Centerforce clutch, pedal assembly, clutch master cyl., etc. all on this show car with less than 6,000 mi. on all of it. I also have a 4 core radiator, etc. Anyone interested can call me at (772) 388-0607. We have a 79 280ZX auto trans. to look at locally and have a master trans guy onboard
to assist with the tech side. It would just be great to speak with someone who has done this successfully.......Peter
