I believe it's called the kickdown switch. It's what tells the transmission to downshift a gear for passing, or more accurately, it slightly raises all the shifting points for the gears, which means you shift later and get closer to the redline on each gear.

I believe it is an AC cut out switch. If you have the AC on and are a wide open throttle it will turn off the compressor to give you more power. The transmission is controlled by the TPS.

The switch on the floor is called the kickdown switch. It's another switch to tell the ATCU that the pedal is pressed to the floor. There's also the Throttle Position Switch that's integrated into the TPS that tells the ATCU whether the car is at Idle or full throttle.

Also, the kickdown switch is an A/T only switch. It has no bearing on the AC system and only reports that the gas pedal is completely depressed to the ATCU

^^This kickdown switch...Think maybe it has something to do with our shifting problems in the automatics? Think maybe it is stuck on or something???

It's possible. It could just be out of adjustment. The service manual has a whole section devoted to the sensors and switches for the AT not shifting properly.

I honestly don't deal with ATs on these cars. I've driven one 240SX with an AT, and that got promptly ripped out for a 5 speed (and an SR)

Hmmm...interesting, it was just a thought

Service manual the same as owners manual?

Much much different. The service manual has everything about working on the car mechanically/electrically. The owners manual just tells you to leave your seatbelts clicked in place and squirm out from under them when you open your door.
