Hello everyone. I recently had an automatic SR20 (redtop) installed in my 95 240. Now it will not shift out of first gear. We have changed the transmission computer which was unsuccessful. Does anyone have any other ideas that I could try? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

(Please don't question why I got the automatic in the first place!!)

Thank you!

Well I won't question why you got an automatic but I ask why you didn't switch it to a 5 speed?

The guy doing it said it would be a lot more work and money so I figured I would just go with the auto. (I'm a girl, please give me a break!) He has since changed his mind and wishes he just did the 5 speed because my car has been at his shop for 3 months!

BTW...did you look around at other shops to see their prices on doing transmission swaps? You can have it done for dirt cheap if you look hard.

I'm assuming it's the gearbox that is a goner. Hope you fix it soon and enjoy the car. I was thinking about an auto sr20 swap myself...maybe some day...perhaps a G20.

What do you suggest? Should I try getting a new gearbox? Do you know of ony way to test it? Should I get a S13 gearbox or a S14?

If you don't know that's fine, just figured I would ask! Thanks!

can you get it to shift into 2nd when it reaches certain speed? You might have to drive it in first till it hits rdline or so then see if it shifts into 2nd hard.

Sorry I would not know how to test if it is actually a gearbox or not. I had an assistant manager have the same problem with his Dodge Stratus a couple years ago, he said it will not shift gear how fast he's going. The faster he goes the higher the rpm and he didn't know why...took it back to the dealer he bought it from and they said it was a bad gearbox that would not change gears. Other than that I'm not of much help, I was hoping to lead you in a direction that may help you out. Best of luck~!

I hate to say it but there is a very good chance that the wiring was done incorrectly on that swap. Crossing the chassis with an older engine and newer chassis as well as keeping it auto makes for a very difficult wiring job, my shop charges a lot of money to do that harness. I would have the mechanic recheck the wiring to see if he did it right, or did anything at all.

Thanks everyone! I just found out last night that now it is shifting but way too soon, around 2000 rpms. The guy is working on the wiring now so SpeedRacer1 you are probably right. Thanks!

may be a wiring problem. are you using the SR trans or the KA with the sr bell housing??? SR or KA trans computer. trans computer needs to see RPM, SPeedo and other inputs from the SR20 computer..

I have the SR transmission and we just swapped out my S14 transmission computer for a S13 one (KA). Do you think I need a SR transmission computer?

There are two auto computers in the car, there is a bigger silver one near the ECU, this doesnt do too much but is still necessary. The other one is somewhere over the pedals and is called the shift lock controller, you probably need the SR one of those, and chances are the wiring between the S13 and S14 as well as KA and SR chassis are totally different.
