automatic shifter difficult to move

i have a 2004 nissan frontier v6 xe. the automatic gear shifter is difficult to move. i can hear the solenoid click and the brake lights are working. the shifter unlocks and locks properly it's just hard to move. could this difficulty in movement be in the shifter itself or on the transmission at the other end of the shifter cable? anybody got any ideas?
