Ok my Fiancé has a 99 I30 and she wants to have her car starter re-installed from her old car. They are telling her that they need to "bury" a key in the car so that it senses the key and allows it to start. Now to me it seams like the car is easier to steal now? Cause in theory you can now start the car with a screwdriver? I just want to make sure that this sounds normal... And with this being installed I don't want any wiring issues to come up with this installation. Thanks for all your help!

I would go to a different installer. At least contact DEI at their website, assuming you are using one of their porducts. You might have to upgrade the remote starter if her original is an old model.

Even remote start units from the mid 1990s had instructions on how to bypass the "smart key." Basically there is a resistor in the key that the ignition switch senses. The correct way to wire the system is to put a relay in the system that puts a resistor inline with the sensor when the car is controled by the remote start - the resistor drops out the rest of the time so that the system still works.

This is the explanation in the installation manual from my DEI remote start unit that I purchased in 1996 or 1997. I'm not sure that the Infiniti system works with the same method, but I suspect it does.

I echo Brian's comments about checking with other installers. What you describe sounds like a half-a$$ shortcut.

Yea i though that was a half @$$ work arround and a dam expencive one! Those keys are like $50 per! and a resistior is like $.01!! The auto-starter is a Valet 552T unit. I guess that we will be looking into other installers....

Most of the expense with a remote start system is labor. Just go to a shop and have them put in a new system.

I had a remote starter installed in a Cadillac product and it needed the key buried in the dash also. The problem was the key became defective and the remote starter would not work anymore. The car spent 5 days at the dealer before the original tech got to look at it and replaced the buried key!!!!!!!

I asked the dealer about installing one on my car and they refused to do it. They said it is too likely to screw up the electronics and that they didn't want to be responsible for it if anything happened.
