autolocking craziness?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

We were making a few trips around town yesterday in the EX and at one point the car kept trying to autolock itself. We were going down the highway and it tried to lock (already locked) in rapid succession. It would do it at a stop, it would do it in a turn....there didn't seem to be a particular time when it trigger it. When we stopped the car it unlocked, then locked again. had to press the unlock button to get out. It didn't do it after the car had sat for about an hour.

Anyone else had that craziness?

I have not experienced that symptom yet, but thanks for letting us know, it looks like the computer system was malfunctioning. Since electronic problems are especially hard to find out/repair so i would call dealer to find out if they know this issue on the vehicle.

I haven't experienced such a symptom.

Are you certain the key fob wasn't just hitting something in your pocket (or wherever you had it kept)?

Once I had the fob in my pocket and just as I sat in the car, the doors locked because as I bent my leg, the change in my pocket happened to press against the "lock" button.

Just a thought,David

I would vote for the Key-Fob story too.

Conduct an experiment with the Key-Fob... have the Passenger press the buttons, while you drive and see what happens.

Hi all! Newbie is here.. As far as I know this is a good safety feature of luxury cars.. If I'm right, at speed about 18 km/hr auto-lock engaged, so no one can open any doors from outside, f.e. stealing stuff or kidnap at stop lights or traffic jams. Type of crime popular in some regions. I like it, but if somebody doesn't, possible adjustments could be made.Hope it's helped. Happy New Year!!

My guess is that the lock on one of the doors got stuck in a middle state not knowing if its locked or unlock which resulted in re locking syndrome.. or it was the ghost of the recycled Ford Pinto used in the door.

A big Canadian welcome to NICO, ltlppl79!

BTW, I don't think there was any question about the reason for auto-lock or the way it works. The OP was concerned that it seemed to spuriously activate repeatedly during otherwise normal driving.

Cheers,David

Thank you, David, for warm welcome!! Yes, you're right! Slightly overlooked..BTW, I keep my remote in the top inner pocket, nothing to touch..Since we bought a EX , my wife ( and mom( got one as well )) looking for reason to drive..But this is off the topic..Cheers..

The auto-locking feature is indeed adjustable but it cannot be done at home.

Here is a break down of how it works.

There are three different choices you have when it comes to the Auto locking function on the door locks.

1-Locks at ~15mph and unlocks when the Ignition button is turned off.

2- Locks when the gear shift is changed from Park. Unlocks in Park with key on.(My personal choice)

3- Off, no auto lock operation.

The Consult III and a trained tech are required to make the memory change in the BCM. It is just part of the software and is not changeable any other way.

There are a few other things that EX owners can set, the puddle lights are really easy to initialize and turning the Auto locking feature off is also pretty easy.

That is originally from this thread

I agree with the other guys who say that the key is probably being hit from somewhere. While driving it is indeed possible to hit the buttons on the remote and the lock/unlock functions should operate. I have done this in other cars but never the EX with the auto-lock function. Also pressing the power button while driving more that 1mph or so will not do anything (curiosity got me ). It does not take much pressure to set the locks, and it sounds like a fun prank to mess with someone. If it happens again it may be possible that you have a sticking button in your remote causing a repetitive unlock signal to be sent. When speed increases the lock signal is sent again.

I experienced the autolock craziness this weekend. Driving along, hit a dip (nothing serious...but a good out of the ordinary jar that the car handled just fine) and then all this locking and unlocking. I remembered this thread and immediately pulled out my key fob to make certain it wasn't being inadvertently pressed, it wasn't. The locking/unlocking continued, so i pulled over and turned off the "intelligent lock" feature. Problem resolved, so after running a few errands (shutting off the car a couple of times), I turned the feature back on and so far the craziness has not returned. As I am already sheduled for service tomorrow(bluetooth glitch)...I will mention it to the techs and see if they have any idea. But just so you know, it's not just you, "Inteller."

That's an interesting one. Good call on pulling the key out to check it. I would not be surprised if they cannot duplicate your incident and I wonder if it will set a code in one of the systems. The EX and the 09 FX are the only vehicles that we currently have that have these auto locks. I have yet to see any complaints with the locks yet, but I would not be hunting large potholes to set the system off as that has the potential to make bigger problems.

Please keep up informed if they find something with the shift control and BCM systems. It does not make sense that the system would "freak out" after hitting a road imperfection the unlock function is (if still at default setting) only supposed to engage when the Start button is pressed. I am stumped.

StevetheTech, you were right Service indicated this problem couldn't be isolated with a system code. Nor did they have any idea about how to duplicate it, since I had resolved the problem myself at least temporarily. On that note, I should mention that it happen briefly again this morning and I immediately pulled out my key fob and hit the lock button and the problem appeared to be resolved. So now I am back to wondering whether it was the fob (a stuck button?) Or could it have been a sticky button on the door handle? The car has been covered with winter grit and grime over this last week. I let you all know if anything further turns up.
