auto valve body modification

Hi all.

Long weekend here in NZ, :biggrin:

So i'm putting a vh45 into my nissan patrol. I pulled down my patrol auto box and put in the guts from the auto that came with the v8; the v8 box has more plates in each clutch and also a longer input shaft and fixed stator spline. etc.

I've had a quick look through here and i see one other who has rebuilt his trans- this was my first and I simply bought a generic book on auto trans rebuilding which was great. (Have since discovered the fsm)

I'm wondering if anyone can help me modify the factory valve body (either the v8 one or the one thats in my patrol box) to give harder shifts and increased line pressure. eg which holes get drilled and which accumulators get shimmed.

Also, I manually shift the auto trans via a set of relays wired into the inhibiter switch and the shift solenoids. There is no trans ECU and I have no power going to the line pressure release solenoid so its at "max" line pressure all the time at present.

someone here must have spent time modifying their auto box?

Does anyone know what the factory stall of a 1995's tq converter?

Honestly I can't think of anyone that has done this kind of modification. I know there was an outfit called Level 10 in NJ that sold performance enhanced transmission rebuilds, but I'm not sure exactly what they did.

I remember someone who fooled around with resistor values to tighten up the shifts ...

Thanks for the help guys.

The link was interesting however its not something that i can do as I've already got it running 100% of its capable line pressure all the time.

DIY shift kit info would be great.

Or, links to good shift kits that people have used :-)

I think you have to realize that Nissan designed the TCU to back off on power on shifts to extend transmission life and to make shifts smoother.

One guy who did a VH45DE in a Patrol converted to manual.

I sure would look into a M/T for that application as well. Just seems right...

I had that modification made to a Mercedes years ago to tighten up the "Slop-o-Matic" feel. I'm not sure I would do it again. I think the main body that was modified (a.k.a. drilled) on that adventure was my wallet.

the diesel does not retard power between shifts.

I know a person running this box with a turbo and LOTS of power with no breakages. Its a strong box.

Has anyone actually destroyed this gearbox due to power levels?

Auto's are better when offroading (and in general :-). I'm not going manual.

generally, raising line pressure is only good for any auto because things slip much less
