auto upper vent

I know from the manual that auto upper vent reduces the force of air coming out of the upper vents for creature comfort. But I didn't know how this thing worked until today when I noticed air blowing out of the center speaker on the dash. I always though it was a nice big speaker but it actually houses two vents for diverting air from the other vents. How neat!

The auto upper drys out my eyes, and even the auto doesn't blow much air to the feet, so I use manual mode with the normal vents and feet vents, this works well for me, as the fan and temperature are still auto. It will be a pain when I need the defogger, but then I don't know if Infiniti's auto would switch to the defogger when necessary or not anyway, my 99 Park Ave Ultra, which did use the feet vents, also usually automatically defogged when necessary, but I don't understand how it knew to do that.
