auto trunk switch

my 1987 max dash trunk release does not open trunk i can hear it click but trunk does not open,what could be wrong an how can i fix.

Did you check the gas struts?

Inside the trunk, right behind the license plate area, you can access the latch itself. There's a tab you can feel with your hand. Try to lift that tab up. That's what's happened with our 90, and I figured this out. I think it's a matter of the spring not pulling the latch back up. Got so bad our trunk wouldn't shut and so that got annoying and that's when I found mine like this. So now everytime I use the button to pop it, I check that tab with my hand before closing the trunk, and that takes care of it

gerald found the problem in the area where you said push lever up there is a cable attached to the switch itself,it had slack in it loosened the bracket and loosened the switch took slack out of cable and now it works.
