I started driving my vert today and it started making a noise. Sounds kind of like a whining sound. Then when i press the gas pedal it stops going anywhere. If I put it into reverse it doesn't go anywhere. If I shut the car off then turn it back on it will engage gear again and drive for 20 seconds to a minute and stop again. Any ideas guys? I talked to my uncle who is a mechanic he said it sounds like the electronic shift controller or something he wasn't for sure though. Anybody here know anything about the junk auto transmissions in the vert. This may end up being the sign to convert to stick. But with the economy down I got laid off a few weeks ago and still waiting for unemployment to kick in so it's kind of bad timing.

I can not believe you posted this! During our last cold spell about a week ago I started hearing what I thought was the start of either an alternator or water pump bearing starting to go out. Not loud, but noticeable. Last night coming home from work it got louder so when I got home I popped the hood to find out which it was. The noise was not coming from the front of the motor, but rather from the transmission area! It was late and dark, the transmission was acting fine except for that noise so I decided I would look at it today after work.

Going to work this morning I got about 20 miles from home and I noticed it shifted funny going into third. Another 5 miles and my tach was going higher and I was slowing down, another mile I had no transmission like it was in neutral. I got it off the side of the road and shut it down and checked under hood and found nothing out of the ordinary. I started it back up after a few min and when I put it in drive I felt it engage so I took off for the last 1/2 mile to work. I got into the parking lot and it was dead in the water again. I shut it off for like 15 seconds and when I started it I was able to get it in the parking space. Now it will barely move after sitting all day. What do you guys think, torque converter, pump, or what? What could be causing the bad bearing type noise, I have never heard that from a transmission????

I think mine is the A/T control unit. From what I can tell it's located under the dash close to the main computer. I'll call around and see if they have one at zerolift autolab since they are the local tuner shop and they do 5spd swaps etc all the time. Last time I dropped in there I think they had 5 verts sitting around getting sr20's or front end conversions. Hopefully they have the part I need and will sell it. lol

There is a sensor under the hood, it plugs up to a relay box by the battery, unplug that and you should have no problems, thats what burnt out on mine. Do a five speed swap soon though, the autos are crap. I've got everything I need to do my swap except time.

That may just work for Azrial, but mine is something mechanical, I have a feeling its toast?

I will take a pic of where its at on my vert im not sure exactly what it is all I know is it has to do with the shifting and engaging of the transmission. Suppose to be a back up for the back up kinda thing that Nissan thought was a good idea at the time but the are notorious for going out.

There are three conection plugs stacked vertical behind the battery. You want to unplug the top one.

Allright man that's cool I'll wait for the pic. I was looking at the service manual I downloaded from a torrent. It looks like (from the diagram) it is right by the fender well by the battery etc.

maybe it's this sorry it's bad quality

cool right by the fuse box then i had taken the fuses out checking them. So I was right by it. I'm gonna go drive back to where my car is now sitting and see if this quick fix will work so I can get it back home tonight. Thanks for the help. The members of this forum are awesome.

I can feel you guys pain...after I rebuilt my KA and re-installed it, when I went for a test drive, this happened to me as well.

I unplugged this harness near the relay/fuse box and it at least got me back in the shop. That day I went home and sourced a 5 speed swap. It was at my house in 4 days...2 days later my 5 speed swap was done. Only takes about 3-4 hours with the right tools and maybe a friend to help. I highly suggest doing this mod. It is a shame that no verts came with a 5 speed factory...that, not having a dome light to turn on and off and no cup holders are the 3 biggest let downs of having a vert...but they all can be fixed .

Hope you guys all get back on the road soon.

I'm thinking it's a pump making the noise. I tried unplugging the connector no luck just more of a racket I guess it's time to send it to the shop. Since I don't have the patience to deal with my stepdad if I try to change a transmission in his garage. Since I am broke with the economy in the slump and unemployed. Hoping the new bail out turns things around so I can have money again and afford to get my own place. I guess I'll have to pay someone else to do it thank god for credit cards It doesn't look like it would be hard to swap out but I'd hate to have to listen about how I got the floor all nasty with transmission fluid and I can't work on it in the street because we are supposed to get tornado conditions today............. I'll keep you guys updated on what is going on though. Thanks for all the input and help I appreciate it even if the simple fix didn't work out for me.
