So I was coasting down a road the other day (40mph, at about 2k rpms, in DRIVE, 92 coupe 166k miles, maintained very well) when I heard a faint snap and my RPMs shot up as if I dropped it into Neutral.

Now the trans won't shift into any gear, and doesn't make any noise when attempting to (no rattles or grinding). There is no fluid leak, and has enough fluid. The fluid and filter were replaced about 2 years ago. Lastly, there were no indications of problems until the snap of whatever broke.

I plan on towing it to a transmission shop first thing tomorrow morning, but does anybody have any insight as to what could have happened?

Common Problems In automatic transmission cars that have the overdrive feature, Your modules have most likly burned out. Did you smell any burning smell coming from the ac/heating vents? after it happened if not its probally just a wire...

Had the same problem with my previous car thought it would cost a ton... but a couple modules were replaced and a wiring kit was put in to rewire them since the old one was fried with a little labour charge i was back on the road.

90% of the time the modules will fry when water/rain gets into them or moisture, Sometimes theres a surge like when you put your car into neutral and sometimes they just get old either way easy to fix dont let them rip you off a few people at a garage told me it would be more then $1000 in labour alone I had my friend do it for me for under 300$ parts and labour.

Yeah, I've dropped it off at a local transmission shop and so far have been impressed with their level of customer service. They told me that their in-car tests were inconclusive so they'll have to rip the transmission off and open her up.

I did not smell burning or anything like that, but it would make sense this being some sort of electrical problem, as there were no previous indications of damage and there are no erraneous noises from the trans (before or after).

Rip the transmission off... and open her up... Doesnt sound so nice... sounds like a lotta labour charge if they are charging you for that... Tell them to run a computer diagnostic on it... Electrical problems usually come up quite fast on the cpu. Im sure its not big deal one of your modules is blown right out over some time happened to me twice when I used to own a 98 Tiburon... thing was a hunka junk lotta electrical issues but try and see if you can lead them the other way I dont think its fair they take one full day of ripping up the transmission only to turn around and tell you... Oh one of your wires fried and we had to replace your module which takes mearly a few hours rather then a few days and saves you a tonne of labour charge.
