Auto trans overdrive problems

I have a 91 z32 and it runs fine through the first 3 gears but when I go into overdrive, it shifts into it fine but when downshifting from 4th (overdrive) all the way back to 1st, the transmission doesn't want to return the gears properly, it like lags and the car jerks back and forth, like the transmission hesitates to downshift, and then the car finally comes to a stop in first gear, with overdrive off, it downshifts smoothly from 3rd to 1st, why is this so??

The biggest problem with the auto is it doesn't have a large enough cooler and NO ONE ever flushes the fluid. It only takes a very small piece of material to get into the solenoids that acutally do the shifting for the auto..flushing the fluid will sometimes get it shifting again...
If your transmission fluid isn't pink you need to change it..
Do a complete flush not just a pan drop ( 4 qts) complete flush will be 8 qts or more.
