By your name, I assume you just got the M and joined here? I just signed up here as well, but welcome from one newbie to another anyway.

Does it do it just when it's cold? hot? both? Miles? History? (trans services, etc.).

I had a problem like this with a <gasp> Acura once and it was worse cold and improved some warm. I did a drain and fill on the trans and put in Redline synthetic ATF and it went away.

Another thought: I don't know if the M30 has a "learning" or "smart" type trans, if it does and you haven't had it long, the previous owner may have done holeshot starts. If those two are true, just driving it nicely will soon fix it. On other cars I've had, and if you're impatient, pull the battery + cable and turn the lights on. This should reset the trans (and probably everything elses) memory and it'll learn from scratch.

Not an M knowledgable person, but these are things that have helped on other cars I've owned with similar symptoms...

Not sure if the M has the same transmission as a J30 ,
But J30's do shift pretty hard from first to second until fully warmed up.
