Anybody consider upgrading their torque converter?

Edge Racing Converters builds each TC seperately.

They are willing to give a better price if there are more that they do for us.

I spent a good 45 minutes talking to Andre who is the owner. He explained to me the benefits. Apparently this is one of the best mods you can do for auto trans guys.

Here's why:

Stock TC even though it has a relatively high stall doesn't have the tolerances when built for performance. It is designed to SLIP more which only generates excess heat as opposed to using that as power to the wheels. He can build it with a higher stall rate, higher torque multiplication and not only increase HP and TQ but reduced wear to the transmission from heat.

OEM TC has 14-18% drivetrain loss due to slipping and many people have noticed the lack of low end torque. This is largely due to the torque converter slipping excessively.

This could save you $75-100 off regular price for something that will be able to handle more power than 99% of you guys even dream about building to.

I can't post price here, but if you are interested post up and I'll send you an email.

I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those mods where everyone will wish they had done it sooner.

Torque converter is a good upgrade, but you want to make sure you have fresh fluid in your transmission. I would do an upgrade, if I had money, and a desire to install it.

yup, good upgrade.

fresh fluid is a must

I have heard of several guys that are out of warranty going with a redline ATF fluid recently. I'm not sure. I've just always stuck to the Matic fluid from Nissan.

I just had my transmission flushed about 1000 miles ago. What's the difficulty level of doing the TQ upgrade? I may know of myself and a friend with a G sedan who may be interested, especially if we can do it ourselves.

Also, did Andre give you any numbers on his product in terms of performance improvement?

His guess is about 2-4% across the board in Tq & Hp that you gain back from less parasitic loss. Additional benefits would be snappier driving and better acceleration plus better launching.

Have you ever changed out a clutch before? Should be about the same. Less work than header install.

I have to deal with my transfer case as well, but if you were to do such an upgrade, Matic S would be perfect, since it is a complete upgrade from J.

What is involved?

Drain transmission fluid, disco batteryDisconnect drive shaft, disconnect transmission cross-member, unbolt transmission housing from motor. Roll transmission out of the way.

Unbolt torque converter from flywheelBolt in new torque converter get transmission hooked back into the new torque converter and bolt transmission up

Hook up drive shafts and cross memeber

refill transmssion, hook up battery

Start car let idle for about 2 min check fluid level and gear operation.

This is an awesome mod, you will be able to leave a light at a higher RPM and you will find some power that your drivetrain is currently eating.

I'll do it later when I have more power

yup. exactly the reason I want to get one. Since I'm gonna do a transmission swap I figure I might as well do the TC. Not that hard to do, honestly.

BTW, you'll have to drop part of the exhaust. At least the Y-pipe and midpipe so you can get the drive shaft down and get the transmission down.
