auto transmission sticks in 1st gear

my 1994 240sx has started sticking in first gear after running for a short time after cold start. If i turn off the car and try again then it will change. what could be causing this and how could i go about fixing it. PLEASE HELP!!!

Have you notice the overdrive lite flashing on the dash when this happens?

I have had them before with a bad overdrive switch on the shifter.Also check underneath on the trans make sure all connectors are secure.Let me know after you check the wiring and connectors.

I checked underneath the car and the wireharness is still connected. also the check engine light comes on and off, but that started before the transmission sticking.

Read the sticky at the top of this forum. There is a very common failure that creates this. The resistance in the rev sensor is just high enough to through off the signal but not make the TCM revert to the speedo signal for shift speeds. IF you unplug the rev sensor your shift problem will likely go away. It is recommended to replace the rev sensor if cleaning its connection doesnt help.

wow i remember when that thread was started to figure out what the hell was up. a lot of testing and long hours went into that.
