auto transmission problems

i think that my transmission is dead. my mom was driving my auto 89 240sx coupe and it just started reving and wont go into gear. is the transmission dead or could it be something else. the only gear it will go into is park,and it just revs in everyother gear. i just want to know what i should check before i spend money on another transmission or rebuild.thanks alot
