vehicle is a 1998 mercury villager with about 57,000 miles

the transmission shifts really hard on the 1-2 shift, and my dad claims he can feel it slipping. does it when warm too, only not as bad.if you are off throttle during the shift it feels normal.all other gears shift fine.

whats the deal?

you may be confusing broken motor mounts for hard shifting. take a good look at the motor mount right in front of the engine just below the front exhuast manifold. They tend to break quite frequently. power brake it in drive and use small snaps of the throttle and see how much the engine jumps when you do it. It should be smooth movement not quick jolts when snapping it.

I have customers come in all the time complaining of harsh 1-2 shift and it ends up being that mount that they are feeling.
