Short history: A year and a half ago I bought my daughter a '93 240 with 57k miles and an auto - something she wanted even thought she knows how to drive a 5 speed. Last year transmission started slipping and was replaced with a local find. Last week transmission #2 went out. Car is completely stock, since she's 19 and broke.

Right now the transmission stays in 1st gear way too long and slips severely in 2nd and 3rd gear 90% of the time and it's hard to get over 40 - 45 mph.

Okay, so time for another transmission. Me, I'm a Supra guy (90 turbo) who doesn't know a whole lot about the 240's and could use some much need help, so here are a few questions:

1. What are the known problems with these transmissions and what's the best way to minimize the chances of another problem keeping in mind her budget is very limited?2. Is there anybody in Louisville or close by with a good used auto transmission for sale? I wanted to post this as a WTB in the classifieds, but don't have the post count yet.3. What would a 5 speed swap run and is there anybody in the Louisville, KY area who could do a good job at a good price? Is there anybody local with everything needed to do a swap?4. Is there a Louisville local 240SX online community I could go to for help? Thanks for the help!

I just scrapped a DOHC auto transmission too. Dangit!

The auto's have the same issues most auto trans' have; heat kills and most of them are driven daily around town in OD in sub 50mph traffic building heat and shifting between 3-4 constantly.

I'd just get a good clean used model and add maybe a external transmission cooler.. tell your daughter to leave it in D instead of OD around town and it'll help keep it from building that heat from 3-4 shift so much.

OP, you may want to check out our classifieds section for someone selling a transmission. You may also want to check out something like Craigslist or other local boards since AT's are fairly heavy and will cost a hefty sum to ship.
