auto transmission only using second gear

i just bought a 1991 nissan 240sx that wont go in first or drive gear automticaly inorder to take off in first gear you have to put it in manually. after take off you can shift it in drive and it will shift to second gear ,but will not shift to drive or overdrive. i was told it was a electronic silanoid that could be the cause of the problem. anymore info on such a problem would be greatly helpful. even with a complete transmission swap it was too good of a deal to pass up.

Had the same problem with another automatic car "Not a 240" and just make sure u check all your modules in my car the daylight running modules and a couple other modules had burned out and had to be replaced along with alotta wires...

Does anything else happen? Like a check engine light or overheating? This problem sounds like Limp-Home-Mode. Usually,when this happens, another failure has occured the the ECU has deemed hazardous to other components on the car and limits it to 2nd gear forward and reverse. Hook up a scan tool and see if there are any codes.
