Last summer i bought a 1989 240sx coupe I loved it! I ran the piss out of it till i snaped the cam gear right off.I parked that car and bought a 90 240sx fast back but it is an automatic. I want to swap the 5 speed out of my coupe and put it in my fast back. Is this a big deal or should i just sell bolth cars and buy a fast back that has a 5 speed.

If the fastback is in good shape and you like the car, just swap your 5-speed guts into it like you said. It's a bigger risk to take to go get a new-to-you car, as you may not know what's wrong with it when you buy it.

It's not that hard of a swap PROVIDED you have all the right parts...

I'm in the middle of mine on my S14 right now and the only pita is that parts aren't fitting right.

89 and 90 should be 100% interchangeable.

Good luck.

It is very easy, as long as you have the tools to do it. There are quite a few writeups on here (there is one on my cardomain page, granted it's not the best out there) but they will help you out a lot.

Good luck.

the hardest part that i had in one of my swaps would have to be cutting the hole for the clutch masta cylinder. then of course putting the transmission up. everything else should just bolt right up.

Shouldn't take more than a day max. Like tonynalli said the hardest part is cutting the hole for the clutch master and maybe getting the auto out.

Have you guys actually done it?

Maybe it's harder for an S14 but I'm finding nothing seems to work right.

I have a 1997 and am using parts from a 95 and nothing fits right. Brake pedal goes right through the steering column so I have to cut and re-weld the pedal....clutch hits the floor before the going all the way down so I have to shim the clutch assembly away from the firewall... hard lines need to be re-bent to work with a different master cylinder... bleh

I worked on it all wednesday night...thursday night...and friday night.... doing it all myself so far tho so maybe that has something to do with it.

I have done a few S13s and a 95 S14 but the donor car was also a 95 S14. I ended up cutting the brake petal to fit the black rubber piece over it instead of changing out the whole petal. I'm also the clutch petal sits about almost an inch off the fire wall. I will have to check my friends S14 this weekend. Sounds like the hardline may have gotten bent in the process.

yeah I'm taking some large nuts and using them as spacers between the firewall and the assembly...but the bolts aren't long enough so I'm going to have to hit them out and put in some longer ones...then hopefully the clutch will work.

On the 95 did you have to drop the steering column to get the brake pedal out? That sumbich was hard as hell to pull out...took me like an hour alone just to figure out how to weasel it out...nervous about trying to get it back in...

One more question if you don't mind.

I have the 95 ECU and I notice my transmission harness doesn't have a connection for the o2 sensor....can I just plug up the o2 bung and not get a CEL on the 95 since they are OBDI? I was under the impression they didn't use a rear o2 sensor...

I cut the brake petal to fit the rubber part. I didn't want to pull the petal out, extra effort I didn't want. I would plug it up for now and figure it out later. He did get a CEL for the trans sensor and check engine light. Since we don't have emissions he just drives it.
