I almost have everything to do the 5spd swap. Trans, starter, 5spd driveshaft, master and slave cylinder, the bypass line, hard line, clutch, flywheel, and pedal.

I think just the pilot bearing is left.

Yesterday however I met a friend of a frend who works on cars with his dad. They told me that the swap is going to be hell. That i need a custom drive shaft, manual ecu, Some of the moutning places won't line up and that it would take like 3weekends or so. I know the pilot bearing can be a ***** to take out. But is the swap really problematic?

I am running a stock open diff rebuilt with an VLSD. The motor is a KAe

Read my writeup in at the top of the tech section.

They lied to you kinda

It will take 2 days of hard work. You will need a 5 speed driveshaft, and 5 speed ECU if you dont want CEL. All the mounts line up, some pilot bearings take 30 seconds to get out, others take a few hours depending on luck.

(Oh this pertains to the DE, I imagine the E isn't much different)

I love your write up. I assume they had trouble because the car they did it for has miss matching parts maybe was using an sr block with ka stuff. IDK but don't think its that difficult to do from reading.

I am having some one who said he has done it before and knows alot about 240's help me.

If the trans just came off of a car with no problems should i still replace the throw out bearing? It seems like a difficult thing to replace.

The throw out bearing is pretty easy, you just pull it off and rent a press and press it out of the sleeve, then reinstall with a new one in the sleeve.

I would suggest replacing it (plus most clutch kits come with one if you are getting a new clutch - which i reccomend). While you have the transmission off you might as well replace the TOB since they wear out, and a bad one will give you hell.

Oh, and the 5 speed transmission crosmember is different - you will need one so that the holes line up.

You can do the 5spd swap in 4 hours. Do it right, and get a 5spd ECU. Replace the TOB, too. Just do it right. You'll be happier later.

My car was an automatic converted to manual before I bought it and I believe I have an auto ecu. I dont have to clutch in to crank. Have to be careful and make sure she's not in gear though.
