Just last week I started having issues with the auto tilting wheel/seat feature. When I push to start the wheel will only tilt down a little bit (not all the way to the preset position). The seat isn't sliding forward either.

I would say it doesn't work 50% of the time I start the car. I could live without it and turn the feature off - but it's still annoying. Anyone ever fix this issue before? What am I looking at?

Thanks

Mine does that now and then too, but it happens a couple of times in succession then not for a long time. I don't get why myself. :wtf2:

Same problem here....however....I turned OFF auto-sliding seat feature, and kept wheel feature ON. I am 6'4" so for me seat is already pulled back enough for it to stay at the same place without jeopardizing comfort and getting in and out of the car.

Since then, wheel has been sliding up and down with out any problems.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys. Good advice on turning off the seat slide. I'm only 5'10 and 33 years old. I don't need the feature - in fact in's kind of like an old man Caddy feature - but hey, it should work if it's in there.
My M's got 133K now...wondering if the mileage (and number of times this function has been performed) is affecting it.

The memory setting on the wheel/tilt and seat will return to the last settings you had them on before turning your car off. At that point all you have to do is press the preset number you use (1or2). Sometimes we make adjustments to the wheel and/or seat after the initial memory set up to simply reach over/under or just around the interior of the car.... that is the only time when I noticed any changes on the memory. :gotme

There was a thread a year or two ago about this and/or the mirror problem. A mod responded (I think SteveTheTech) and indicated that all of the things that happen automatically at start-up work together in a certain order and that the start-up sequence is stopped if a fault is detected. That said, if turning off the seat allows the wheel to move completely and everything else seems fine, there is most likely something wrong in the seat (like a position sensor or it's jammed). On the other hand, if a mirrors is set to tilt-down on reverse and it tests that at start-up, perhaps setting the mirror to do that would allow the seat and wheel to move correctly (the mirrors are a common failure point in this car, but so is the seat frame, and perhaps when it gets bad enough the seat can't move).

that might be the issue I'm having. Every blue moon my mirror won't return to the correct position when coming out of reverse. Eventually it will correct itself on it's own. Ever since the the first time I noticed that happen my seat and steering column would randomly not go to the correct spot. I'm taking it to the shop next week, hopefully they find something wrong.

thanks Dustin

good info Dustin. Thanks. A few days ago I turned off the auto wheel feature and the seat is moving every time now. The reverse mirror tilt feature is turned off - always has been. Sounds like I have a wheel sensor issue.
I'll stay with this and deal with it if it gets worse.

I took it to the shop on monday and they found a faulty tilt sensor on steering column. They said that it could of caused the other issues. They replaced *sensor assy-tilt-48992-7y360*. So far everything seems to work fine.

I was also having this issue. Turned out to be the steering column tilt sensor as well.

I've had my car into the dealer 3 times for this issue. They've replaced motors and sensors in the steering column for both tilt and reach. I last had it in for this in July and it seems to be working great now. It started off just not returning occassionaly and then got worse and worse. Sometimes it would start to move and then just stop without getting back to the set position. I've had no problems with the seat or mirrors.

My mirror/wheel/seat never return to default, so I just turn all three off.

How much is the steering column sensor?

I got the car back from the dealer but they couldn't find the problem with the steering/seat.

I need to show them it doesn't work before they could start changing any parts. :bs:

My problem is that it only happens when the car is not used for 4 or 5 day. As soon as I hit the memory she works just fine.

Hello every one,

I've been noticing this happening in my M lately, I'm 6'7" so I don't have the seat feature on cuz it's all the way to the back so I don't use it and I have the tilt steering wheel option On, I think I will turn it off and turn it on Kay be that would do the trick however like some one stated pressing the preset button will put it down to wherever it was last stored but this only work when the shifter is on P.

For what it's worth, I've had the same problem, my M35 has 156k miles in July 2017. We had to replace two things -- the "memory switch" which is the pushbutton assembly in the door for drivers 1 & 2, but that alone didn't cure it. I went back to the dealer, got it re-diagnosed, and the Steering Column Tilt Sensor Assy 48992-7Y360 (QX56 M35/45) is next to be replaced. I declined the repair cuz I'm buying the sensor online for 2/3 of the dealer cost, and then I'm going to open up the steering column and try to replace it myself. Let's hope it's not too tough to replace myself. But this would cost me $650 at the Nissan dealer (not the Infiniti dealer) so if I can do it, cost is only $170 with parts and shipping. DEAL. Now I gotta try to install it. But if I can't then I can let the dealer or someone else do it for a lot less. These "tiny" parts are extremely expensive......

I know this is for the G35 but if the steps are similar, probably going to end up at the dealer. #f***$

Has anyone tried bypassing all the automatic crap and some how allowing power to reach the power tilt/telescope directly?

How so?
I think you achieve the same result by turning off the memory option on your screen. Then the switches and buttons work like a normal car without the memory option.

Is that what you mean?

I dont have the memory menu option since I have an 06 Maxima, but I came across this thread hoping to get some resolution to a similar problem since no one on the Maxima forums seams to know. My telescopic/tilt is stuck in the up position. My power seats work so its not the pinched wires Ive had some people mention. And I dont believe it is the gears since I do not hear the motors turning.

Since these are all basically electric motors that need a switch/signal to turn on, I had wondered if anyone has ever tried splicing a few wires to connect the motors and joystick directly to power to bypass anything memory related.

Ok, I'm with you now. I suppose it's not such a prevalent problem with most people that anyone has installed a manual switch to bypass the memory stuff.

However, if you're the only one that uses your car, I'd unplug the harness that feeds the tilt and telescoping motors. Then probe and feed 12 volts directly to the pins until the steering wheel is where you need it to be comfortable, and forget about it... Or until you pioneer the write-up for the bypass switches.
This is assuming you have checked all the fuses and relays and tried the time-tested fix of tapping the electric motor with a wrench

Ha no I hadnt tried tapping the motors yet with a wrench. I havent even had a chance to keep diagnosing it. But yes one of the first things I had wanted to do was remove column cover and inspect motors/gears and at least see if power is even getting to the motors since all the fuses are fine. Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like the motors have 5 wires coming out of them - ground, direction1, direction2, and 2 for a position sensor.

Is it even a common thing for the Automatic driver positioner control unit to fail?
