I'm starting to look for used G35 Coupe. I haven't decided if I want the 6MT or the auto. If I plan on modding it in the future, should I get the 6MT? I also wanted to know what should I look for when I test drive one. Are there signs or noises that would show abuse from the previous owner?

Do you enjoy changing gears??
Do you want to be changing gears??
Nobody can really help you decide between getting a 5AT and 6MT....sorry.
I've owned nothing but either 3MT, 4MT, 5MT until recently and am enjoying my 5AT!!! :bigthumb:
HOWEVER, that's me.
I also battle a sore left knee due to trying to stay in shape practicing TKD
BUT, there are def. days where I miss my Comp Plus Hurst or Steeda Tri-Ax!

And, you will have 6MT owners telling you to get one and 5AT owners telling you to get an auto.

So, not being of any help to you....sorry.
I will say that I've heard the 03/04 6MT transmission had issues, but the 03/04 5AT was solid.

Also, there have been some issues with 6MT motors having oil consumption issues.
If I were in the market for a 6MT I would buy one with plenty of power train warranty left due to the oil consumption issue. I would also look at getting > 04....mine is an 04 5AT.

Good luck!!

I love my 2010 sedan 6MT, but, the fact that the G37 came in a manual was a big reason why I bought it to begin with, so I'm clearly a biased source. I have to say, the clutch is a little bit stiff, and after over a month, I'm still not a pro at shifting smoothly.

Good luck!

Alot of it would depend on what kind of driving you do. 90% of my driving is stop and go, so I went with the auto. :tisk: I hate it on the few chances I get to get on some fun curvy roads. If my driving was 50/50 stop and go and curvey roads, I would have gotten the M6. I miss my sticks. Almost all the cars I have owned were stick shifts. I love down shifting. I really miss it.

The clutch can be tricky to shift smooth. I love my AUTO...but it's the new 7 speed. With my 05 6MT, I put in a lightweight flywheel and stage 4 clutch. The only thing I hated (other than not following through with my FI mod) was the annoying rattle the transmission makes with a light flywheel. The OEM is a heavy, dual-mass design.

Thanks guys.
I plan on getting a 05-06. I want to get the 6MT but they are harder to find used. I might just have to settle for the Auto.

I assume you are searching autotrader, cars, and CL ?
must be in a small market, there are 6 within 25 miles of me
One is a 05 6MT w/nav 43K asking $19K

It depends what you prefer to drive. I used to drive manual. I learned with it and used t for 12 years. Switched to auto cause became lazy. LOL

However the new auto trannies are faster than manual shifts. Some are as good as the manual on mpg.

At the end it is up to you. I know nothing replaces the 3rd pedal feel when you drive.

I've only seen 2 within 200 miles of me haha but I'm picky with the color and miles. I have seen a few in cali that I like, so I'm going to go out there soon.

just don't 'settle' for an auto if you reallly want a manual!
That's a big purchase that you will have for several years, so you don't want to have regrets.
