i have a '90 240sx also and i'm debating the same decision. I found and new engine and a transmission conversion for a reasonable price. But i'm not sure if it would make much of a difference.

had stock auto but was buggered when i got the car, replaced it w/ another auto. 1 yr later car decides it doesnt like the auto transmission anymore and drops the drain plug. got a really good deal on a 5 spd swap (freebie) and now its lke a tottally different monster, massive launch, longer drifts, and a helluva lot more fun. but the choice is yours- non-shift w/ auto or double clutching fun w/ 5 spd
