My 2002 Qx4 bought new now has 45,000 mi. Until recently the auto 4wd setting worked perfectly and the car could be driven in that mode with no noticeable difference in sound or handling. The point of the system was to provide 4wd only when the sensors called for it. It no longer functions that way and the car feels like it is in 4wd upon turning the knob to the auto setting. All the noise, sluggishness, impaired turning radius, and a loud clunking upon turning the knob back to 2wd are present in auto now. As it is still under warranty, I have twice taken it to the same dealer for service. The answer both times has been that the car is performing as designed and the diagnostics bear them out. They even said that the claims and statements in the owner's manual are sadly incorrect. Can we get some help before we turn this into a class action?

I don't know much about the system, but I can't imagine that the "auto" setting should function just like the other 4WD settings.

Check your email... I just sent you the portion of the FSM for your truck that deals with the AWD system. There is a self-diagnostic that you can run, and a lot of diagnostics and repair procedures - so maybe you can find something there that will help.

Good luck!
