audio problem

The audio output in my '93 J30 would intermittantly go off (radio, tape or CD). Then it got worse. When turned on, there would be no output for a few minutes, then it would pop on and occasionally pop off.

After looking at the schematics in the shop manual, I saw there is a relay that activates the speaker/amps when the unit is turned on. I checked this, and found no control signal. I removed the radio, opened it up, and found at least two surface-mount components whose solder connections were suspicious. Re-soldered them and now when I turn on the system, I can hear that relay click and I can hear some hiss from the speakers (they were completely silent before). But, still no audio output.

There are 3 header terminals on the PCB marked CD-MUTE, AF-MUTE and MUTE. I assume these are to mute the audio while the CD is hunting, or the radio is tuning. AF-MUTE is normally at 5V and goes to ground when tuning. I assume this is correct. Not sure what MUTE signal does. Maybe for the phone?, which has been disconnected for many years.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm an EE and would much prefer to fix this thing rather than replace it.

I wouldn't know off hand whats what inside the radio, but it should be a Clarion radio, maybe you can contact their customer support for some info on the radio.

Yes, it is made by Clarion.I'll go that route if I have to. Getting info as a consumer and not an authorized repair shop is usually the problem.

Thanks.

Nevermind... fixed it.Completely disassembled the unit down to the pc boards.Found a few more components that looked to have bad solder joints. Touched 'em up and now its working.

Dude, that is awesome, I think that's the first time anyone here has fixed this problem with our radios, they are notorious for intermittent display, sound and power. I just wish you could have taken pictures, that would have been great. Good job.

You could have an extra income source that way. Used BOSE radios that work go for about $100 on ebay. Might be worth tracking down a few that don't work.

I'll see if I can find my old one. If I can, I'll send it to you for free if you want it.

That is awesome. My parents got me a brand new Panasonic headunit for Xmas though, so I might donate my headunit( ITS IN BRAND NEW CONDITION, when my Dad gave me his car, he NEVER listened to the radio, so its brand new). But, I might sell the car before I go to College, im not sure.
