The audio output in my '93 J30 would intermittantly go off (radio, tape or CD). Then it got worse. When turned on, there would be no output for a few minutes, then it would pop on and occasionally pop off.
After looking at the schematics in the shop manual, I saw there is a relay that activates the speaker/amps when the unit is turned on. I checked this, and found no control signal. I removed the radio, opened it up, and found at least two surface-mount components whose solder connections were suspicious. Re-soldered them and now when I turn on the system, I can hear that relay click and I can hear some hiss from the speakers (they were completely silent before). But, still no audio output.
There are 3 header terminals on the PCB marked CD-MUTE, AF-MUTE and MUTE. I assume these are to mute the audio while the CD is hunting, or the radio is tuning. AF-MUTE is normally at 5V and goes to ground when tuning. I assume this is correct. Not sure what MUTE signal does. Maybe for the phone?, which has been disconnected for many years.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm an EE and would much prefer to fix this thing rather than replace it.
