A friend of mine is under the impression you are required to change your engine in your japanese car living in Japan at X number of KM, he thought it was 30,000km....and is telling me that if it isn't that then it's some number. But having to change your engine for emmissions reasons every so many miles? Please tell me this isn't true...

This sounds like total bs. I have seen many cars for sale in japan with a good bit over 100,000km. I know they have to keep paying for the car, like a luxary tax I think it is called a rice and is every 3 years or so in order for you to keep your car. Sounds like some BS a engien importer told someone. Alot of honda people in this area (NY) insist that engine from japan are all between 30-40k miles cause of what some importer failed to explain. I'm wondering though is there a rice/luxary tax when you ship the car out of the country?

Owning a car is a luxury in Japan. You don't need a car in Tokyo to go around. That's why not many people have a car ( or they just can't afford one )

To keep car market alive, I can see why Japan goverment have a very high tax on car for those over a certain years. If not, everyone will keep their car for years and years, and car industry in Japan will die.

That's also why alot of car is being ( front clips example ) sold to outside Japan. It is better buying a new car than keep a old car after the high tax and good $$ trade-in ( demand is there ).

Sorry.. maybe is not the tax, but the charges of "goverment fee" that involve in owning a car. And the repair $$ for old cars, and consuming more fuel ( old car does )

All I mean is, it is cheaper to buy a new car than owning a old one.
