since nico was first created, how long did it take to accumulate enough members and start producing knowledge? was it just a few people talking about random bs for a while before that?

NICO was founded almost 5 years ago by Dr Rex Birkmeier a longtime datsun/Nissan/Infiniti Owner.

It was funded entirely thru his personal contributions.

As traffic increased so did the knowledge base and after about a year, we had a knowledge base that made us attractive enough for new members to want to stay and not wander off.

Much of the original knowledge base came from just a couple of dedicated folks and Rex wrote all of our early articles.

Later Torry (aka ezcheese15) and Fred (aka me) added some and they spent a lot of work seeding the forums with interesting threads hoping someone would respond. And people did.Build it and they will come.:D

We also had a real breakthrough, when the yahoo folks +240SX.org crowd joined us withhin a couple of months of each other.

The bulk of our 240SX members + moderators are from our 240SX.org division.

In 2000 yahoo was converting over from clubs to groups format (with many pop-ups), one of the current NICO Officers who had been very active there convinced most everyone from there to come here asthe format here was much easier to use.

And frankly Dr Birkmeiers personality helped as we now had a real guy to work with, instead of the "yahoo's" that make up yahoo.com webmanagers.

many of our current mods/supermods/admins come from that yahoo group.

Originally NICO was started as a site with yearly dues, but they never brought in enough to defray server costs a lot and Rex (Dr Birkmeier aka "Speeddoctor") always pays the difference, to keep us up and posting.

We now have some sponsors, which help us out, but since the site is so incredibly active and generates so many hits(=bandwidth), our founder Rex still subsidizes it every month out of this own pocket.

I think this would be a good place to say thanks to Rex aka SpeedDoctor:

Thanks Rex,

Fred..:jazz:

Oh and one more thing:We switched to vbulletins from UBB, cuz we like this format a lot better; a bit over a year ago.

Thats why no posts are older than a bit over a year; and all post counts start from then ( I lost 1500 cuz of that, hmm maybe I should just re-set my postcount)

thanks rex, thanks mods.

vBulletin kicks ***. I wish we had a more solid member base, with more Zs, maximas, datsuns, etc. though.

Also, How about a 'Suggestions and Help' forum?

gator:yes the switch was a hassle for member and lots of work for admins, but I think it was well worth it, as this format allows us to be so much more response to changing needs.

We can change forums, forum titles mods etc all at the stroke of a keyboard which was more diffcult in UBB.And we have made use of all those new features in the last year.

Also the memebrs interface is better i think and we are about to build in some extra features for members to use soon.

Yeah, what Fred said. When we had the UBB forums, it was controlled by a different server. They made our lives very difficult. Used to be, if we wanted to change a moderator, we'd have to email the company, and a month later it would change. And we had *no* admin rights. Also, we were only allowed 3 moderators for the entire website!! (which at the time was me, speeddoctor (rex), and garek (phil, who is no longer a nico member)). Then we dropped phil, and paul came into play (movingviolation240). We also had no control over any of the forum categories. We had to email the server company, request a change, and *if* they felt like it, it might happen, a month later.

I had talked to Rex and convinced him to switch to VBulletin, along with an entire website redone. The current site was launched in April of 2002, and has proven to be a far superior site compared to the old one. Mostly because *we* are in control of it now, not a distant company who knows nothing about cars. Another thing that helped, was Nancy! Nancy came on board I believe sometime around the end of 2001/beginning of 2002. Her help in creating the new site, and dedication to have this site be the best Nissan/Infiniti site in the world has sure payed off! We owe a big thanks to her as well!

well im glad i stumbled upon this thread, thanks for all of hte history guys, nice to know how this great site came about, hopefully one day ill be considered an 'old timer' edit: off topic, but i just had to add it, i once received an email from fred saying he didnt want any hard feelings between him and i, and that he wanted me to stay on the site, he emailed this because he had corrected one of my posts taht i apprently had some sort of false information or something (personally i dont remember him correcting me) and wanted to make sure i'd stick arnd ,thats when i knew for sure, that there was no site better, where else could u get that kidn of personal connection from a man you've never even seen??......ok, im done, thanks again fred
