So, i've got a 1000 miles on my coupe. I went to the Nissan dealer and bought myself a few oil filters and down to walmart to get me some 5w-30 mobile 1 oil. On my way home, i decided to "floor" it a couple of more times, get some of those engine parts nice and hot to finish their break in with conventional oil.

Much to my surprise, i discovered up to this point, i never actually "floored" my car!

I stuck it in manual mode, and let it shift by itself. I noticed it would shift ~6000 rpm (about 500rpm from redline). Then i stuck it back in automatic mode and to the floor, it picked about 5900-6000 RPM and stuck there. So, i'm thinking, how do you achieve redline??

Still in auto mode, i put my foot to the floor, as the RPMs were coming up, i pushed just a little bit harder, and its like something "moved" (like a switch depressing) and i found about 10% more throttle, and the car jumped right to redline and was OUT! Without better knowledge of what the pedal is made up of, i am assuming its a "WOT" switch for the computer is what i felt.

SO, what i wanted to know, has any other 3.5 CVT (or even standard) noticed this behaviour between the feel of the pedal, and characteristics of redline?? My car just got so much cooler! :P:

its called a kickdown switch. i was pretty surprised myself that it was included in the altima design since its usually something you find in european cars such as benz's.

not to mention, in the CVT, there is not "lower gear" to "kick down" into LOL

Interesting...

I don't think I'll be "flooring it" until 20k/km, when I switch to Castrol 0W-30 (German Synthec).

I dunno PWC, you tell us! without your car running (or on the highway), push the gas pedal down gently until you feel it stop, then push down a little harder and see if it "clicks" past the switch

Well I have a 2.5 and I just went out to my car to try this and yea... it stops and if you press down further it clicks.

Can someone explain what is so awesome about this?

Its the hidden NAWWWSSS switch

Ok, all kidding aside. It appears from what I've read, a point where the gas pedal can go further to the floor so you can romp on it I have a 6 speed, I'll check it out later. Hope you guys aren't breaking anything.

What is so awesome about it? feels to me like its an additional 20hp i didn't know i had before! When activating that last portion of the throttle, the engine gets throatier (real word? lol) and definitly pulls harder and achieves higher RPMs....

Hey generic, you find this in your sedan? Must make that intake sound even better! Or, did you already know this and have been doing "true" full throttle?

Ah, sounds good. I don't know when I'll get to use this because I barely get half way down on the gas and I'm already at 60.

I guess I'll see what the 4 banger can do when I take it on the freeway next time with this new switch thing.

My car has this to, so im pretty sure everyone has it. Its ment for when you want to redline it just push a little further. Im sure its not harmful in anyways and is designed to be like that.

Reminds me of the transmission kick down rod on older automatics LOL

Yes, i believe this to be a "passing gear" if you will. Since the CVT has no gears, i suppose it more or less a WOT indicator for the ECU. I'm curious if the 6spd has it as well. SHIFT_COUPE, any input?

I've known this for quite some time. After installing the intake, I was running WOT all over the place!! I'm lovin' it!!

The 6-speed does not have this feature and does not need it, why?

Since the CVT was overall designed for comfort and economy naturally even if you've got a heavy foot the CVT will still hold back to reserve some economy. So they usually put these kickdown switches in some Autos and CVT's and it tells the transmission to not give a damn about gas mileage and go balls out.

Naturally since you have full control on a manual transmission you can go balls out normally if you just floor it.

Oh and uh, P.S. the VQ doesn't make full power at redline (6600 RPM) it makes it at 6000~6200

I have a baby on the way and that put my two S13s on hold till next year, soon or later i will finish them both. Well we went looking for a family car and guess what we found an Altima my first. I must say i like it, i came to nico to see what you guys think of it well this is the first thing i read. I love it even more now. She said we could have got a scooby ( WRX ) since our neighbor has a EVO, gee why did you not say this while i we was dealer hopping. I don't know this CVT 4 door might be fun, of course it is for the baby. Thats awesome a kickdown switch they did not mention that at the dearlership. She already yells at me when i drive now wait until i show her this. After the baby is born and not in the car of course.
