Me and a friend of mine are thinking about painting our own cars in his garage and I was woundering if anyone could give us the list of things we would need to buy or a good thread to go to with it on it I know its not the greatest of ideas but I would like to learn. Plus I dont have 1-2k to spend on a paint job but if the equipment cost like 500 or so me and him could split the costs so if anyone couold let us know that would be great.

You need a good air compressor, which doesn't pulsate(give you orange peel). Then a gravity fed paint gun and decent paint. Spraying really isn't TOO hard with some practice. I sprayed my friends truck last year. Just take your time.

I think gravity fed ones just produce a cleaner job, but the one you have might work fine.

if u do get orange peel...ull need 2 wet sand...its not too hard...anyway...you'll need about a gallon of paint, gallon of reducer(different types of reducer depends of the temp) ull need about 3 quarts of primer...gallon of clear coat plus hardener for the clear. an air gun...u can buy an a decent air gun at a body supply for about 90...ull need sand paper...maybe some bondo...thats about it...

my buddy's brother is setting up a spray booth in his shop about 45 minutes from me. i would really like to know how to paint and also save myself some serious $. I can't wait for it to be done, on another note the guy I work with used to paint cars, so it will cost me next to nothing for a paint job.

Paint outside only if you want stuff flying on to your car while painting or clearcoating.

Heres a list of stuff you should get:

1. Latex gloves2. GOOD paint mask (from homedepot for $30 TRUST ME, WORTH IT)3. Masking Tape (Neon Green type from paint shop $7 small roll)4. Masking paper (At Home depot $5/roll)5. Fast Thinner for cleaning paint gun (autozone $7/gal)6. Mix Sticks7. Paint strainers (from paint shop)8. disposable in-line filter (paint shop $6)

If you paint in side your garage, make sure you water down the floor 5min before you paint so nothing goes flying while painting. Good luck

For air compressors, you actually want to look into its capacity as well. For a paint gun, I believe you'll atleast want a 30gal compressor. Any less, and the the motor will be pumping while you spray, and you'll be getting that pulsation that everyone has been talking about which is not good.

For air compressors maximum psi is not as important, as much as being able to hold 9 to 10SCFM @ 100Psi

something like this

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr...61000

would be to handle most air tools, sanding, and the mother of all air sucking things -> spraying.

Also, do NOT get oil free air compressors, they are loud as f**k and fail far easier than those 2 stage oil lubed ones.

Plan to spend at least $1k for the whole entire setup.

I think you might need a bigger compressor try to get atleast a 30gal with 5hp. If you are get the one I thing you are getting (2.5hp 6gal) you'll have a hard time keeping the paint/clearcoat even texture.

For paint, depends on how long you plan on keeping the car? If you want to go cheap buy 1 step paint (no clearcoat, enamal based) usually $18/qt if you want the paint get 2 step (urtheane based) paint. 2 step paints have different qualities good quailty is PPG usually $50-$60/qt there are lower quailty paint like Omni but I don't know the life expectency for this paint. PPG will last you 5-8 years.

One more factor to consider when choosing paint. If you ever need to match for some reason (repaint in case of new fender, etc) Cheaper quality paint is more difficult to match. PPG will always comeout the same shade. One more thing if you paint the entire car and door jambs and hatch area get atleast 1 gal of paint.

donno if it matters to you, but I'm doing the same thing myself this summer-- I just went down to my local paint shop and they priced out about $500 for sealer, custom paint, clear coat, paint sprayer filter, and a couple rolls of tape.

by sealer do you mean primer? ouch...how many gallons of each would that be? i'm doing the same thing this summer as well.

what exactly (as in price, brand, type, etc...) is each thing in the $500?

thanks!

I think he means primer as well. Price should be for everything. A Gal. of PPG Clearcoat with hardner is about $200, Gal. of PPG paint and reducer is about $220 Primer is only $35 Gal.

no it's not primer. It's a special sealant that I am going to use because I am not going to take the paint down to the metal. The guy at the shop (among others) reccomended that since I have "good" paint already on my car, I can just scuff it up with some wetsand, then seal it, then spray the paint. No primer at all.

This is what I've heard from a couple people, so it would really suprise me if it's wrong... The paint is PPG brand btw.
