i bought my 240 for 550 bucks a while back, 91 se fb (no lsd). the guy said he ran the engine for 36 miles w/o coolant and it had low compression, assumed it was hg or burnt rings. ... so i disassemble the engine, and the ring to wall clearance is HUMUNGOUS, i could stick a dime down the side of cylinder number 1, and the others werent looking very good either. Then upon further diassembly i pull the pistons out and they look nice, very very very shiny and new, the bearings look great, hardly any wear, and the crank looks very very good. But after closer inspection upon the pistons i find this...

the piston to wall clearance was too large, which caused the ringlands on ALL 4 pistons to break. And yes this engine has a sticker from attarco on the side of it so i have no doubt it was bought from them, but geez, whoever did the machining on the bores did a terrible job ( pistons are .020 over) it looks like i could damn near slap some .040 over pistons in and it would fit all fine and dandy.

i had the same damn thing happen to my motor that was build by a shop in portland, OR after 1200 miles... it was dead so i inspected it myself and found out that they never gaped the rings...... there was a .005" ring gap when there should have been .018"... so my rings butted against eachother and scraped the cyls down to nothing...
