ATI and nVidia. Back and forth for years now. I've always got whatever has the most, for the cheapest price. HOnestly, I was an ATI guy back in the day. But nVidia has come a long way. I personally have a 7900GTX in my machine right now. the 8 series are a bit overpriced still. I may get another 7900GTX and run them SLI, but my 6800GT's didn't do much for me in SLI. So I'm still confused.. lol

I've switched back and forth so many times there is no real line, performance v. price is where its at. Unfortunately for AMD-ATI the merger has been a really nasty bite for for ATI (and AMD). A lot of blame is on the prez of AMD, which was just replaced (which also was viewed as the responsible honcho for cutting NOKIAs legs too). So for now Intel and NV are carrying the lead by a boat load. AMD-ATIs current goals are to turn the company back into the black, which means staying away from anything thats enthusiast or performance.

ATM I use Nvidia's 8800GTS/640mb, very fine piece of equipment!

PS: NVidia/ATI isn't a video card, its a company. Thats like asking what you drive and saying GM! ITS A SUPER FAST!. (sorry pet peeve)

PSS: Also, the only ones with a strangle hold on the graphics industry is Intel believe it or not, they hold the highest share for GPUs with their mobo built in units! In comparison, NV/ATI pale.

At the moment I would go with Nvidia's 8800 series. Their anti-aliasing performance definitely beats ATI's at the moment.

Something between $100 - $200 but I'm not concerned with running everything at full detail just having most new games run at good fps and decent graphics will make me happy.

Medium graphics with new games means you'll be spending 250$, high graphics 500$, anything under 250$ and it will be all low graphics settings. Now a days though, if you purchased a 600$ video card but your ram/CPU is trash, then the expensive video card is not gonna help at all.

Out of stock at the moment, but for a tad over $200, this card is capable of running pretty much any game out there at high settings. (assuming the rest of the computer is up to spec) The lack of ram is its only weakness and so long as your aren't gaming at super high resolutions or cranking up the anti-aliasing, you will be fine.

The GT is OK medium card, it doesn't have enough Stream processors and the core clock is low, so when you try to pump up a good game with it, it will fall flat on its face. When you buy online from reliable sources like newegg, you really get what you pay for.

The 8800gt has 112 stream processors, and available with a 700+ mhz core clock. For reference my 8800gtx has 128 stream processors and a 620mhz core clock. In most benchmarks the 8800gt can perform within 10 to 15 percent of the much more expensive 8800gtx.

Your analysis is simply completely false. For the money it is a heck of a card and very capable of playing ball with the 'big boys'.

Thanks for your advice everyone as it turns out Futureshop had a sale on all of the 1st week of January and I was able to find an EVGA 8800gt 700mhz 512mb DDR3 for $220 Cad. I am very impressed with it thus far and feel it is the exact card i was looking for, plus if i find another one later for cheap once people upgrade again i can run them in SLI mode

I liked old nvidia and new ATI , if that makes sense to anyone here. I am looking to get a 3870x2 because the new 9 series doesn't look all that great.

I've owned both. They are both video cards, they both run games well and with both companies you get what you pay for. I have no preference.

I just cooked my PNY GeForce7300GT and replaced it with a PNY GeForce8600GT. Picked it up for @129. WOW, what a difference. I don't game (at all, as in never), so it works out great for me. Dual DVI is a plus too. I never realized how much better DVI is that SVGA. What an awesome difference.

Well, when running a 3D demo, I wasn't satisfied with the 8600GT. I took it back and now am running a 9600GT OC. Way better!

Sorta off topic but is DVI really alot better than SVGA? My card has DVI and my TV I use as a monitor has HDMI but the DVI > HDMI cable was $50 so I said screw it, do you think it would be worth it?

I don't have a TV hooked up, so I'm really not sure. I use dual desktops and the clarity difference is huge. The DVI makes all the difference in the world. It's up to you whether or not it's worth $50.

I just traded out a really good graphics card, for the newest of Nvidia's cards. It cost me an additional $100. for a grand total of $250 but I really want the best graphics available. I won't go overboard and spend $500 on a card, but it was worth every penny to me. It also made it pretty cool, that I scored a card on Sunday that won't be released until tomorrow.

Personally, I say heck yeah, it's worth 50 bucks. Especially if you watch movies on it.

The difference on and LCD tv sould be similar to that of a computer monitor so i guess Im going to try and find a cheaper cable then, thx!
