ATF type?

Transmission is working fine except for a couple times at freeway speed the torque converter has unlocked for no apparent reason - no hill, no acceleration, just cruising along. This is during a 55 mile drive I make a few times a week. Then it resumes working normally and all is fine.

I just checked the transmission fluid and it's low, below the inidcator but still no the stick. Then checking the manual for AFT type I was surprised to read 'Nissan-matic N'.

Is this equivalent to one of your run of the mill fluids, Type F or Dextron II, or do I go to the dealer and get the right stuff. The fluid was changed by my mechanic 30K mi ago.

Thanks in advance!

I did a lot of research on this when I got my car, I switched to Mobil 1 ATFand installed an external cooler.

The J takes Dexron II. M1 ATF is compatible, and works great.
