Today I receive the long awaited external ATF transmission filter. Unfortunately, I think the filter may be for a different year or series. The filter on my 91 is mounted in the passenger side. This filter mount appears to be for a driver's side installation. I can see three plugged holes where this filter could be installed. I like the filter because the hoses are shorter.

However, this filter has an additional connection on the out side. I have the additional connection marked with a red V below.

Can anyone tell me the purpose for the additional line connection and if the filter can be mounted on the driver side on a US model?

that filter is designed for the 94-96Q and the cars came from the factory with it installed on the passengers side behind radiator near the battery- the extra outlet you have marked in your photo is one of the 2 filter outlets that get connected to the in-radiator atf cooling units{ the filter has 2 outlets, one for each cooler inlet on both ends of radiator}

Thank you Qship for the quick response!

Since I only have one cooling unit on my 91, I guess it won't work. I am planning to install an ATF cooler, but there is only one active line.

I like this unit's design better than the 91 model's long hoses that run under the fan housing.

Because I don't want to wait another 5 to 6 weeks for delivery, I'm about to give up on the OEM part and just install a magnafine. When I ordered the filter, I was glad to see the in and out hoses as part of the filter assembly. So I will need to buy some rubber hose locally or develop some method for using a metal line as a bridge to eliminate the long rubber hoses.

The filter was made by Kyosan Denki Co. I don't see ATF filters as a product at their web site. It might be the reason the parts are so hard to get.

you have a couple options at this point

1. install filter as is and just cap off the 2nd output nipple- simple

2 depending on how old your current radiator is, you could purchase a new radiator designed for the 94-96Q with the twin atf coolers and use your oem filter { a CSF radiator is between 120-150$$}

3 return filter and go with the magnefine, which is an excellent filter and cheap enough to replace every 30,000 miles or so- go to the magnefine official website, as they are quite reasonably priced there, less than many retail stores!!!

Any of the above will provide excellent results!!!!!!!

Thanks Qship!

Ahhh -- the previous owner spent a bunch of money at the Infiniti dealer to replace the radiator just before I got it..

Is there a possibility of making an output nipple valve that I could hook up to a drain type hose to for doing a fluid flush?

I thought the small nipple was a bypass of the filter in case the filter got plugged. Is it on the inlet side?

The problem is that the pump only pushes fluid. The input line to the transmission from the cooler does not suck fluid in.

About ten years ago, I had a "two bucket" flush method that I tried for a brief second, but realized quickly that it wouldn't work. I think there's a problem just pouring it in to the fill tube at a similar rate, because the ATF goes to the back of the transmission, so the front parts suffer from fluid starvation (due to the lack of fluid that normall comes back from the cooler) during the flush if you do it that way. That was Q45Tech's thought if I remember correctly.

That extra nipple is on the labled "out" side of the filter. I my fleeting idea was to use a valve to control the fluid output flow to get similar to the input rate.

But with the Pela 6000 pump I can easily pump the pan almost dry -- then get a reading on the amount removed for replacing it with new. It may be more hassle in the end than using the Pela pump. I pulled the pan and did the seal and screen change right in the garage as I had already removed most all of the ATF with the pump before I started work. Wasn't really all that messy.

I like to change ATF at least once a year -- to keep it fresh..

Ya'll know how I'm going to the nth degree on this restoration project to make sure even things like the little grommet in the picture below is correct... LOL.

I think I'm going to keep it.. I waited long enough for it..

I can route the output hose out of the side pipe and find a creative way to plug or route an exit hose from the pipe that points down.. LOL

I'm off to see the folks at the local parts stores..

Did you buy a brand new switch assembly or were you able to just get that rubber cover?
