Well it's officially a no go folks. AT&T still has to pay the sum of $4 billion just for the trouble, even though the deal fell through. Say what you will, but i'm still very happy that this deal did not work out :woot:

“The actions by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice to block this transaction do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry. It is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world, with a mounting need for more spectrum that has not diminished and must be addressed immediately. The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled.”
Sprints statement regarding this:
“Earlier today, AT&T terminated its definitive merger agreement with Deutsche Telekom to acquire T-Mobile USA. This is the right decision for consumers, competition and innovation in the wireless industry.

“From the beginning, Sprint has stood with consumers who spoke loudly and clearly that AT&T’s proposed takeover of T-Mobile would create an undeniable duopoly that would have resulted in higher prices, less innovation and fewer choices for the American consumer.

“Sprint commends the Department of Justice, the Federal Communications Commission and the bi-partisan group of state attorneys general who gave voice to the concerns of consumers across the country. We look forward to competing fiercely in the robust, competitive market that exists today and continuing to deliver the world class service and products that consumers have come to expect from Sprint.”

I don't remember Sprint being so anti-merger when they were buying Nextel. LOL

I am glad the deal didn't go through, and not simply because I loathe AT&T (well, okay, partially because of that). This shows me that, no matter how much money you put in politicians' wallets, they'll always ask for more. Bravo!

The shirt and ties want to maintain their image as a pro-consumer product to the general public.. This is just a fancy way of stating that and hiding the real truth. The main goal behind a merger of any sort is to increase profits and make it easier to create products. So the reason why they backed out, IMO, is probably due to the fact that TMO set a high asking price and they didn't like it.

If they said that in the press, consumers would begin to think they're only in it for the money. Saying it the way they did keeps the sheep in the herd.

P.s. Their products/network service are far from world class.

Apparently Dish Network is interested in acquiring T-mobile's cellular spectrum. I have no idea what their customer service is like, but it can't be worse than AT&T's.

I despise AT&T and have had very poor dealings with them in the past as a customer. Alternatively, I've had great customer service from AT&T and the product and services themselves had been great, too. Regardless of the political and economical debates surrounding the merger, as a customer I couldn't be happier that it has been abandoned. I left AT&T for a reason, and moved to T-mobile for a reason.
