I forgot what a touchy-feely image AT&T had before it was bought by SBC.
Some of the items mentioned:
E-books -- Yes
GPS -- Yes, Oldsmobile offered the first factory option in 1995
Video conferencing in various forms (but they said it would be through phone booths)
Faxing from the beach -- Made possible in the mid 90s through portable devices from IBM, Motorola, 3Com, and Apple. You could put a Motorola PCMCIA data card in an Apple Messagepad and fax a document from anywhere with an AMPS signal, slowly.
Buying concert tickets at kiosks -- Yes
On-demand pay per view -- Yes
Online classes through videoconferencing -- Yes
Buying groceries without scanning individual items -- RFID can do this, but isnt being done
Watchphones -- No
Home automation through a PDA-like device -- No, but close. You can remote start your car with an iPhone
Talking life assistant -- Not yet
Carrying entire medical history on a card -- No, but the technology is there
On-the-fly language translation -- Technology exists
Electronically renewing driver's licenses -- Yes, but not at a kiosk
Electronic toll booth passes
The 90s feel like a long time ago now. So much technology separates my preteen years from today.
