My 92 4x4 DD with 175K on it has been running a little hotter than normal but not hot the last 3 weeks. yesterday on the way home from work something happened and truck has no power and seems to be cutting out. Plugs look ok and engine was running cooler by the time I limped it home. Not knocking or making weird noises. Could the timing chain cause this or maybe something in exshaust? I am kind of at a loss as to where to start looking. Would expect the TC to just stop all together. Any suggestions would be apprieciated. BTW i am new here because this little sucker has been a dandy truck. Had it since 93

Welcome to NICO. I have to ask what engine this 92 has in it, V6 or 4cyl? You say it was getting hot then it cooled off, is the coolant level correct in good shape? I'd start simple by checking fluids and filters first then going from there. Was anything recently replaced or serviced on the engine?

It is a 4 cylinder and when I raised the hood with it idling it smells like rich exshaust but plugs are white. I am pretty sure it isn't ignition and wondering about little pump on top of engine or muffler as it no longer has a catalic converter. Am going to check compression and see if one cylinder is laying down but am leaning toward something exshaut related. The plugs were replaced 6 months ago maybe not long and fuel filter a month ago and antifreeze could use a change was a couple of years old. Only been a day and I miss my little truck.

I had a Mitsubishi PU that displayed similar symptoms and it had blown the intake manifold gasket. I think I got it fixed for around $85.00

Thats interesting. Had not thought of that. I'll keep that in mind a vacuum check should diagnose that. Thanks

Yes, a vac check will tell you all sorts of goodies about this engine. Take a moment and check out our KA engine forum. It has dealt with every engine problem known to man and is a very good read. I bet your situation has been covered in there before.

Here's a link to the KA forum.

OK been awhile since I had a chance to work on my truck.I checked intake manifold gasket with carb cleaner and could not find a leak. So I decided to test fuel pressure and found it a little high by the book readings but when testing the fuel pressure regulator I found that when I applied enough vaccuum to it to get fuel pressure to prescribed 33psi it smoothed out. So I bought a roll of vaccuum hose and replaced every vaccuum line I could find( jeeze there are a bunch) Truck now runs smooth and doesnt seem to overheat but I have not had it on the highway yet. Guess it had a bad vaccuum leak. Nice to have my old truck back running thanks for the help guys.
