okay, I understand that there are probably a lot of asian members on this board and all that, but perhaps even they can provide some insight into my question:

WHY cant asians understand PLURAL words?! hahaha I've met so many asians with perfect english, EXCEPT they simply cant make a word plural! Whats the deal??? Is it something thats just not present in chinese or japanese or korean or whatever? How come, across the board, plural is the thing that MOST asians seem to mess up so horribly?!

!?!?!?!?

I make many stupid thread, I know.

well.... when english is a second language.. many of the little details are just sorta dropped. It's not just an asian thing. I'm sure we sound equally ignorant to them when we're over there.

I'm Asian, and I have no problem with constructing sentences that are grammatically correct. This thread is full of s***, you're singling Asians out and it's totally unfair. Just because you know a few Asians that don't meet your standards with the English language, you think they're all like that.

dude chill out...we are on the same boat here. I speak better english than 90% of the americans around me and it is my second language. he is not generalizing. he is just asking about an observation he made...

Fiz:

It is just a language barrier thing. remember that the asian cultures have a completely different language structure and there are even words that we have that do not exist in their language and vice-versa.

I'm sure you didn't mean any harm... but stereotyping Asians on a site dedicated to a line of cars designed by an Asian company? No offense, but that doesn't seem to intelligent.

I think what you meant to ask was why do SOME Asians who were not born in a English speaking country have difficutly with plurals.

P.S. I'm not Asian, but I have many friends who are, and they use plurals very well. :)

I wouldn't call him a "racist" but he is a bit ignorant. Hey Fiz, why not ask those Asians you met with perfect English what's up with the plural usuage? But instead, you made a thread asking about it. I know why, cause it would be ƒucking insulting if you asked them.

Zero: Don't tell me to chill out. I ain't on the same boat as you, so back off.

Does that blanket cover enough? Let's replace asian with italian

So your point is that you're offended by his use of the word "asian"? Just because he said it a bunch of times... I never saw him say ALL asians can't use pluralization. I can see how you would be offended by the post, and yu have every right to be... but I don't think ANYBODY would make an absolute statement like that... because OBVIOUSLY it's not true for an entire ethnicity.

I'm not trying to stick up for him, I'm just saying (as I said in my first post) that it is a function of ESL (english as a second language) NOT of being asian.

EDIT: and if you're going to quote someone it is a VERY bad idea to change the content of their post and add the words to emphasize your point.

fiz is guilty of nothing more than making a dumbass statement. I detect no malice in his post, a marked lack of good judgement for sure but no concious intent to insult anyone even though it obviously did in Holistic's case. While I personally think he is getting his panties in a bunch over nothing he is entitled to his interpretation and the resultant feelings.

I think that this post was taken the wrong way. Calm down.

He was asking about the difference in the languages...

My answer (limited knowledge of Japaneese), is that there IS a difference in how plurals work. Basically, as far as I know, they dont exist.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think that in order to say "two Silvias" one would say "ni no Silvia"

This could account for what you are talking about. It takes a relatively good skill at language in order to incorporate a completely new concept like pluralization (or conjugation for that matter... none of that in Japaneese either) into a second language.

By the way, correct me if im completely off... the only experience that I have is three years of Japaneese in High School.

woah woah... ok alright... jeez I didnt think you guys would take it like that. it was meant to be a silly observation... I'm sorry if I offended any of you.

...and yes, I have many asian friends, and we make fun of eachother all the time for our little habits. I say my friend Young cant pluralize words, and he calls me "roundeye" or whatever else comes to mind at the time. Racism is for strangers, tolerant joking is for friends. I understand that we're not exactly "friends" in the normal sense here on the internet (well, some are), but comeon... I'm not trying to say asians are bad (or even that they ALL talk funny). Have some faith, it IS a Nissan board!

Relax a little bit and try not to be so defensive. Life is more fun that way.

cheeeerieist! you people. as soon as one person gets offended someone feels obligated to jump down their throats about it. Just let him be offended. I can understand how one might take offense to that. I am trying to learn japanese. I'm just starting, but I think there aren't realy any multiple forms of any word, ie plural, posession, etc. so when learning english I'm sure they just learn the singular version of the word and forget to pluralize it cuz it isn't natural for them to do so. english is the hardest language for any non-english speaking person to learn, cut 'em some slack.

Read his post again. I am not offended that he used the word "Asians" mulitple times. I believe you are misinterpreting it. For example, when I say "why can't those Asians learn English?" Did you get the the underlying generalizing tone in that sentence? By saying "Asians" he's implying to "all Asians."

...and yeah, I was asking it in a joking manner, but I really AM interested in if there is a difference between the languages that leads to the VERY COMMON dropping of pluralizations (sp?). I think that's kinda interesting how the language habits blend together in a way that some things are dropped for others...

honestly... it was a real question asked in a silly manner.... again I'm sorry, I didnt think this was going to be the reaction.

*and thanks for those who defended me... I appreciate your faith :)

holistic- calm down

His comments were not derogatory in any way. I've noticed there are many asians (yes, I said asians, oh no!) who have trouble with the english language. I am sure if I went to Japan I'd have trouble with Japanese and they'd ask what the heck I was thinking when I said something absurd. Fiz was just asking if anyone else noticed a certain trait in asians that makes it hard for them to grasp the concept of plurals. Get over it, you could have simply said "I don't have that problem" and we would have all understood. Instead you turned this into a racist thread. I personally have nothing against asians, some of my best friends are asians, most of them speak english as well as any american I know. Some have trouble with making sense of certain nuances of the language. I also have a russian roommate who has trouble wit hmany words. One time he said "beat with your legs" instead of kick... we had a good laugh and it was over. You need to learn how to take these things in stride, because if you get offended at every little comment that is made about a culture, you're going to be whining for the rest of your life.

Just understand that it was meant in good faith, and not as derogatory statement. ;)

well, you make a good point... but I think the word "THOSE" is the operative word in the phrase... and it negates any generalized interpretation. But.. one could argue that if even ONE person was offended by it than it is inherently offensive. Who knows... I see your point... and I would be the last to deny you your right to be offended by it...

Idiot. This board is getting more and more rediculous. This is a discussion board, not a jump down your throat board. I am so sick of seeing people ask questions, "stupid" or not, only to have them ripped apart and flamed.

Look, if i see a topic i dont like, i dont click on it, or i go onto the next one. I dont flip out and post a load of non-constructive messages. Quit being a little girl, go find out who ran off with your balls, grow some thicker skin, and just answer the question. Otherwise, click onto the next thread.

I shouldn't be jumping into this argument but what the hell...

Hey.... theres a sweet commercial about the new Nissan Maxima. I want one!!!!

ANyways, back to the subject. I don't know why your being offended. Yes there are people that don't speak this "perfect" engish. It is there second lanuage and does don't have the same rules. If your from another country english is extremely hard because it follows so many different "rules".

I'm cambodian, vietnamese, and chinese. I can honestly say I speak them fluently. And highschool is making me take another foreign lanuage. Those *****es!

Um...

Like if I were to say in cambodian "I want to go pee" and do a translation of what I just said it would mean "want pee". You just have to add it in...... I don't know how to expain it to you guys. Its weird..

I have a ton of respect for someone who learns English as a second language. Have you guys really looked at the way this language is setup? It's whacked! Every rule has and exception, it draws words from at least six different languages with various modifications to each, throw in slang and regional accents and yikes  If I had to learn English as a second language I doubt I could do it.

gotta chime in on this one... my girlfriend is asian(i'm white as snow), and speaks english fairly well... but still stumbles with the language sometimes. we tease each other about certain things from our different cultures, no harm done. she calls me her leprechan(sp?) coz i'm a bit irish, and she begs me to say that "they're always after me lucky charms". i dont yell, scream, complain, and jump up and down because she may be teasing me or enjoying the differences in our cultures. this board, as of late, has been filled with alot of culture sensitive problems. i hope we can all lighten up a little and enjoy good relations with Asians and their culture.

and for God's sake, quit pulling the damn race card!! doing so benefits nobody!!

I was going to stop responding, but for NISMOdrift240 here, I'll make an exception. So I'm a little girl am I? With thin skin? Grow up man, name-calling may work in your high school, but they don't hold up much here. Probably the next round of insults from you will be "yO mama" jokes. You're right, if there's a topic that I don't like, I won't bother to respond. However, if that topic is somehow related to me, I will respond with my thoughts and opinions, like most NICO members unlike yourself. This thread itself is non-construtive, as your great sense of observation can see, so replies will be non-constructive. If you don't like what I post, IM me otherwise stick to the subject. It's cute that you're trying to personally attack me, join the bandwagon. You got that? Now get the ƒuck out of my throat.

My point is, EVERYBODY, the original post, I interpreted to seem like an attack towards Asians. But it has since been cleared up by the original poster. I was merely stating my thoughts and feelings about it. Yes, I was a bit offended, but I have gotten over it and moved on. I can't respond to all the different replies, so I'll just end it here and keep it to myself, and I'm sure the rest of the NICO board will too. My AIM SN is Holistic beatz, if anyone wants to say something to me, there you go.

SmithSR, you always have great replies and I always have a few comments for you, so I hope you IM me.

NISMOdrift240, I have a few more words for you. But I won't waste another post just to get it through to you.

Everyone else, thanks for playing. Can someone close this thread already?
