The woodgrained door that covers the cigarette lighter and ashtray will not close. Opened unexpectedly yesterday and will not stay closed. When I push it down, I hear a click, but it will not stay secure. Any ideas what is occurring? Would like to have some information before taking it to the dealer.

It's about $250.00 from the dealer, to fix it. Mine was replaced by the previous owner. Is that what information you wanted?

Actually, it is probably 10 year old plastic, just finally gave up the ghost. You could try to spray some windex in there, in case some dried Coke or something sticky has gotten the latch stuck in the open position.

Appreciate the quick response. I was afraid that it was going to be costly. Will try the windex and see what occurs. Fairly handy with tools, things mechanical in nature. Do you know how this component is removed/replaced? Perhaps it is something that I can do without incurring dealer labor. Thanks again !!!

My ashtray door would barely close ajar when I got it. Thought I had a plastic piece broken and would have to find a replacement enventually. But when removed the whole dash to repair a warp dash (top part), I found a missing spring (like a paper clip) at the bottom of the tray. Sorry I can't be more specific as I just remember being able to put it back together properly when I had to reassemble the whole dash.

Try looking for busted and/or missing plastic and metal peices. The an Infiniti Article about removing the dash that is very helpful and much better than the FSM. You won't need to dis-assemble more than a few peices to get to the frame that surround the ashtray door. It does take a more step than you think to properly remove the ashtray assembly and put it together.

Don't go to a dealer first if you can help it. It may take you a couple of more hours to fix or diagnois it, but at least you'll now why you're paying $250 to have fixed or not. Also, your dash won't be missing any hardware.

http://carstereohelp.com/stere...o.htm Should be about the same for the 94-96. As far as the ash tray, one of the pivots broke on mine years ago. I was able to put a short stubby sheet metal screw in there somehow and get it to work... no problems for several years!

I think I'd look for a used one... although the early Q's had many ash tray problems, I thought the later ones were improved - so you may have a good chance of getting a good one from a salvage yard.

Mine was not working correctly when I acquired my Q. I removed the wood finishing panel surrounding the gear selector (pulls off by sliding backwards) and then I found that the problem was a loose screw; there are two at the base of the ashtray compartment. I tightened this up and it works like new.

Hope this solves it for you

I just updated the link in my earlier message. I should have read your member name! For some reason I assumed you had a Q. Instructions look about the same either way...
