Ive got a local shop that I'm probably going to for dyno tuning when I'm done with the build. It's 150/ hour with 2-4 hours expected. My question is what would I lose if I went with an ashspec ecu instead? Upgrades I'm doing:

Megan downs and tests
Jwt genie catback
Godspeed smics
Jecs 550cc injectors
Sbc blitz controller and timer
Ams underdrive pulley

I'm hoping to get as close to 400hp as possible

you wouldn't lose anything, when you say an aspec ecu, do you mean an off-the-shelf one?
a custom tune, i.e., on the dyno is always recommended.
fyi, i would run a ztuner ecu wayyyyyyyyy before i would run an aspec ecu, much safer history.

If you don't mind, what were your mods?

got a dyno chart with boost, afr's, and hp/torque values?
his reputation is mixed at best:
http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/f ... r-car.html
"When it comes to tuning he will throw all safety out the window to try to make more power to make himself look better in an effort to push his other products which he can't even deliver (in an acceptable amount of time anyway) and he will never take responsibility for something like the problem you had with him because it would hurt his ego too much."

http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/f ... ek-to.html

"tell everyone about what a great job [sarcastic] you did tuning my $20,000.00+ build. I never thought I'd have to have the motor out of the car a week later."

there are far fewer complaints about specialtyz or harry at ztuner.

he doesn't even use the js unit to listen for knock like sz and harry do.

i have his intercoolers, and i'm sure his tuning has gotten better.
i just prefer harry at ztuner, please do your due diligence.

"After, closer examination of the last dyno pull, I'd say my tune looked a little lean when I left, as I don't think 12.4:1 is the standard from 5500-6000 RPMS."

"And yes, going from a number 8 to a number 6 plug, under your strong recommendation, could have created a condition of up to 400 degrees hotter under high boost conditions. This is according to the NGK website, Greg Dupree at SZ, Kyle at IPP and Harry at ztuner.com. Have you heard of them?" whattttttttt

"I ran 18lbs of boost with race fuel on a stock/stage III set up for 2 years and probably made 100 passes with no problems on Harry’s tune."

this is the reply:

"Please learn how to read a dynochart. The mix was 12.23 at its leanest point which is a far cry from being too lean." whatttttttttttt

what does your local guy use to tune? nistune, haltech?
you're in florida, it's your car do what you want, but you're so close to one of the best tuners for the 300zx, not sure why you would take it anywhere else.

Im not defending him/or any other tuner, all i am going to say is that when you tune a car for performance there is always going to be some risk involved. And maybe he was a bad(or worse tuner) when he was starting out but i had no problems. Ill try to dig out the dyno sheets, that was a long time ago, i now use the aem series 2 ecu, still working on the tuning, its not easy. as for the mods when i had his ecu, they were the basic 555s, 2.5 ic piping, greddy inters, dual pop, e85 and sport 550s to name the main ones... and i think it was at 23-25ish psi but i cant remember.

Nistune... And who are you referring to?

I would reccomend Nistune with a dyno tuning session. That's the best to have any tune done, as you said a custom tune..it's custom tuned for that exact motor, with all the minor differences that exist between the same type of engine(VG30DE, 350 chevy, you get the point).
If you're feeling flush, get the Haltech PnP ecu offered by Z1. I love Haltech products, having used them before at work. It's more expensive, but it's easily the best ECU on the Z32 market...the most tuneability with the same easy install as the others.

Oh I understand that, but I'm looking at a custom tune for 600, that haltech is 3 times the price. Expensive is one thing, outrageous is another ;)

Yeah, that is about 2 hours away. I got a buddy with a car hauler, so that could be an option. He's really that good huh?

IMHO, his record is better than Ash's, though Ash has improved over the years. He's definitely better than any local tuner not familiar with the Z32, as he's tuned 100's of Z32s all over the country.

BTW, 2 hours is nothing. I got together with a group of 10 other owners and flew in Specialty Z to tune our cars. Harry was our second choice if SZ wasn't available.

e85 as a second injection system, like the meth kits but a bit different... my car is not set up to run pure e85, id need 1200cc injecors and a big a** fuel pump for my power needs.
