I look up stuff on Kazaa sometimes, download a song, if it sucks, then i delete it, read reviews, see what's going on overseas. For example, i always heard about J-rock (japanese rock music), and i wondered what it was like, so i did a search on google, and got a whole bunch of fan sites, and links to bands and all that stuff. I found one band that looked kind of cool, downloaded a couple of their songs, and ending up liking them. I don't know Japanese but the music is cool, and i found some fan sites with translations for their lyrics and they happen to be good songwriters too (weird at that). And then i made a cd to listen in my car.

So it's not that hard. Just most people don't do that sort of thing.
I have dial-up, and a lot of other people do too. That makes it hard to simply download a song to try it out. Because of limited bandwidth, I have to pick and choose what to download.

btw, who's your favorite j-rock band? B'z are my favorite, followed up by Doggy Bag

Most country fans don't consider her country anymore. It may not be the case anymore, but I think she was disowned by the country fanbase a while ago.

well not in a garage band, reason is I cant really play worth a sh**. But what I can play right sounds good. It takes years of practice to get good at playing an instrument. This I did not grasp young and hardly ever practiced with it. Now I mearly work with tabs from already published music, some not right but sometimes I can find the right note by listening to the song. on occasion I will go off and play some scales on my own sounds good to me but likely sounds hurendous to anyone with a real ear for music.

I totally agree with you LiU its about taste for the sound if you like it you'll buy it and support that genre. But I too do not like most of the garage band stuff coming into the industry. It is over distorted crap playing 7 string guitatrs, what the hell is that???.

I am stating that music composisition today is weak in true musical talent. I am a fan of older rock bands primarily but I have intrests in many styles of music, country ,rap, alternative. But I only truly enjoy music thats produced with talented composition. eminem[sp?] is a genius with lyrics,he has no string instruments in his music but he himself has amazing lyrical talent.

Pierrot is my fav, and Glay has some good stuff too. I can't get over the glam/costume bands they're scary.. like malice mizer

Ever hear of Yoko Kanno? Not J-Rock, but she's an excellent composer/singer, she's done TONS of memorable music from anime series like Cowboy BeBop, and my fav soundtrack: Macross Plus, plus a bunch of other stuff.

Never heard Ashley Simpson sing. I have heard Jessica Simpson sing though. I listen to classical rock, country, oldies, and few radio stations that play mix of everything of soft rock, etc.

I use to listen to Pop music but that was when I was a teenager. God I feel old by saying that. Which wasn't too long ago. I'm only 20..geez...where's time gone too?

I dont even like jessica... Most of her songs are just her either screaming her guts out or ones that dont have her voice as the main idea....

She's got a good voice just doesnt know how to use it...

heard of her? i almost got to go see her in concert once :D It was Otakon '99 or '00. Can't remember. She was the guest of honor, but her concert was packed and we couldn't get in. So we went to go watch some live action hong kong cinema. Quality.

Glay's not too bad. Move is slowly moving up my list (no pun intended) as I watch more Initial D. Tokio is another one of my favorite bands, Yaida Hitomi had just released Buzzkill when I was in Osaka. Creepy video, great song.

I listen to country music mostly now. I'll agree that she doesn't deserve to have any sort of record deal. It should be about your talent not about who your sister is.

Tenkawa: Sweet! My friend mentioned to be the other day that she almost got to see her too, but she got to Otakon late. Honestly, i live 1.5 hrs away from baltimore, but i've never been to Otakon. You have good taste man.

If that were the discussion at hand I dont think that would be an issue at all, there would be no disagreement but we arent talking about boneing her we are talking about her lack of singing talent.

C-Kwik wrote:Hmm? Why are so many people so judgemental? If you don't like a certain song or artist or whatever, don't listen to it. Simple solution. If someone enjoys listening to a certain type of music then, that's fine. As long as they are happy, who cares? Individuality is the one thing that noone can truly ever take away from us. Stop trying.

As far as artists are concerned, I would personally love to be able to have a job where I can make others happy and do something I enjoy doing. There is nothing wrong with that. Live and Let live.

I agree with you, as much as it irritated me when ex-gf raved about Ashlee Simpson's music, I realized some people are perfectly content listening to her music even if it is unremarkable, formulaic "teeny-bopper" fare.

However, it's very disconcerting to see an MTV-fueled musical landscape draped with sexual narcissists the likes of Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Chrisitina Aguilera, Beyonce etc. but that's just the nature of the business. It's unnerving, no doubt, but it's just a sad reflection of the state-of-affairs of this style-over-substance society of ours where the masses prefer videos adorned with women (usually reduced to slick visual packages)- performing banal choreography routines over music with actual substance.

Back in high-school, my music theory instructor lamented over the "death" of musical instruments in America. In the not-so-ancient past of America, most people were capable of playing a musical instrument or two. With the advent of music videos, I think American ears are getting lazier and lazier. Now, I'm willing to bet the vast majority of this country can't discern the differences between a saxophone and trumpet. Our culture is so visually-dominant that, when offered a piece of music without an accompanying video, some people's eyes wander. In general, it seems that music can't stand on its own anymore. It needs visuals to chaperone it, preferably teen vixens easy on the eyes.

If you look at the number one consumers for this type of mainstream music, it's usually teens and young adults. I believe that for the most part, our culture, especially in high-school, doesn't particularly cater to the cultivation of musical aptitude. I remember back in highschool, playing an instrument wasn't a popular or "sexy" thing do to, but taking up activities in sports were.

Music is so subjective that, unlike something like food, there's infinite room for argument. Sad indeed, but it's just the nature of the beast. To quote my fave rapper, "Don't hate da playa! Hate da game."

i like electronic forms of music (breakbeat, trance, etc...) and i also like some classical (although i dont' know much about the composers, i just listen to it on the radio sometimes, or movie scores)

to me electronic music is what beetoven, bach, etc... would be writing today if they were alive.

That sentence applys to just about any female... with exceptions of course

To stay on topic, i've never heard her music, and I don't plan on it. The music of today BLOWS I stay far far away from it...

I'm waiting for someone to investigate my sig and say "Yo pills, that band ****ing rocks!"... (hint, go check them out!)

Jesda wrote:Ahh so true. I love Dave Matthews Band when he's not singing. I freaking hate his voice, its painful and embarassing. But the drums and strings are pure heaven.

HEAVEN, I say!

Its also why I love country music. In a synthesized pop world, its really nice to hear fiddles, banjos, mandolins, and acoustic guitars.

-Jesda

I'm not particulary fond of the genre, but the last time I trekked from Boston to L.A. I gave it a chance. Though most of it didn't speak to me at all, I was blown away by stuff from Steve Earle, Patty Griffin and Kasey Chambers. There's nothing quite like gazing at the beautiful American landscape while being serenaded by an angelic Southern bumpkin.

True dat! You can't imagine how many people raise their eyebrows when I tell them I listen Spaghetti Western soundtracks.

For the most part, I think I represent convenient stereotypes of Asian people in terms of musical orientation. I'm a huge fan of electronic music- everything from techno, trance to triphop. Chemical Brothers, Felix Da Housecat, Aphex Twin, Bjork, Plump DJ's, DJ's at Work, Massive Attack, Monolake, Goldfrapp, Photek, Basement Jaxx, Sneaker Pimps, Squarepusher, DJ Shadow, Stacey Pullen, Lamb, Portishead, etc. are some of my personal faves.

I'm also a fan of conventional bands too. Wondering if there are any Boards of Canada, Our Lady Peace, Bright Eyes, Sigur Ros, Radiohead, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey fans here?
