Help guys ,I've been stripping my car (down it's birthday suit) and there is black insulation material
to insulate floors, transmission tunnel & firewall from road noise & the heat of the engine
I would like someone, anyone with a fact based answer to enlighten on asbestos in the Z car.
Now I know that it is or was in brakes, clutch fiction material & in the hood lining fiber, But how much asbestos is on the classic Z cars we love(and hate) so much and when we work on them are we endangering our health ?
Is in my 73 Two4deeZ's sound & heat damping material asbestosis and have I risk my health by scraping this material unprotected ?

there is no asbestos in the sound deadening

as for the danger of asbestos, keep in mind that it was used in every home school hospital and just about every other building ont he planet for a long period of time, it was as you said used in brake and clutch lining material and the first thing any tech did when doping brakes on an older asbestos equipped car was to blow out all the dust with an air gun, if ti were as dangerous as it's is often though of as being we'd all be dead by now, yes it can lead to a specific type of cancer but generally only a very small pecentage of people exposed to estreme levels for extended periods of time get mesotheleoma

and if you have ever seen a house abated of asbestos they double bag ll the materia and then they pay and extra disposal fee at the dump and it gets thrown in the pile with everything else and run over and mixed in with all the other garbage

if it still scares you wear a mask

Nissan has use asbestos in there in there vehicles for decades even after they declared in march of 96 they would no longer do so, yet asbestos has been discovered in motor vehicles it produced between 1995 and 1999 (Japanese domestic market) so what I'm saying if in 1973 when asbestos wasn't seen as the devil and used in numerous product such as crock pots, baby powder(products that contain talc usually also contain asbestos) and cosmetic, just to name a few .
So this being said I think it's worth investigating are you in fact on what you are saying is it your opinion ?

my statement about the sound deadening is an educated guess, I have not sent it to a lab for analysis, it was generally used where heat and or wear were preimary concers (brake linings, floor tiles, exhaust ducting, etc), the sound deadening's main purpose is to add mass in order to reduce vibration and resonance vibration, most manufacturers have used similar products for years, most are an asphalt base, some more modern lighter deadening is a butyl base

my statements about the exposure and disposal are all fact, so no I can't offer a conclusive answer, but I'd be less worried aobut the sound deadening than I am aobout all the other asbestos still on classic cars or ducting in buildings

Touche, Mon Ami

Just saying I'd like to know not too worried about it if it kills me Familia vould be Vich !
And also the transmission tunnel and firewall insulation/deadening provide both sound & heat shielding
asbestos was used to shield heat the material looks tile like and has a tile'Ish feel to it .
Anyway ,I've decided not touch it but with hatch area(the spare tire hub sheet metal)which had some heat/sound insulation deadening tile like material . I had no choice and when I cut it up I breathed the dust and my lungs constricted and I felt as if where having an asthma attack (oh BTW I have asthma) ,been feeling pretty fatigued lately
heart been racing it's hard to breathe too ,so if it is asbestos I'd like to know I might need to stop smoking everything !

sounds like you should be wearing a respirator at all times, breathign asbestos duct is no different form inhailing any other dust in the short term
you don't get mesotheleoma form breating a small amout of asbestos one day, you get it form prolonged exposure and even then not everyone who is exposed to mass amounts over long periods will get it, much like smoking a single ciggarette will not give you lung cancer, but smoking large amounts over a long period significantly increases your risk

I would think that the only parts of the car that still contain asbestos would be the brake pads and maybe the clutch?

There's no asbestos in the sound-deadening. That's asphalt, tar, adhesives and "filler" (typically paper fibers).

Even if it was, it'd be minimally harmful - Asbestos fibers bound in plastic or rubber are usually safe (old floor tiles, rubber carpet backing) to handle as the plastic keeps the fiber from getting into the air.

Clutch, brakes and some insulating materials under the hood contained asbestos.
