As we reported yesterday, worries over gas prices and strangled vehicle supply from issues in Japan—plus, come spring, the seasonal rise in demand for smaller cars—are altogether resulting in sudden upward price pressure on a variety of new vehicles.

In the five weeks since the earthquake, the Prius has gone from selling for $300 under dealer invoice to at or slightly over MSRP. That's a price hike of nearly $2,000, and considering what TrueCar expects in the next week, will reflect a rise in transaction prices of nearly ten percent since the quake.

I know not all dealerships do this but it's a big blow to consumer confidence and the unstable economy. There's no way I would buy a new car right now, especially after seeing this.

i wont ever buy a new car,ill take a two year old car with 30k miles on it that still has a warranty but let the sap that bought it new take the 5,000 dollar hit on the price.I dont get why people buy new cars ever. The newest thing ive ever gotten was a 2010 yamaha v star about 2 weeks ago and that was because it has zero miles and was only 2200 bucks(id be stupid to pass that up because i can ride it for 2 years and get my money back)

I guess my problem is that I like to do some extreme maintenance things (to engines and transmissions and other moving parts/surfaces) in the first few to ten thousand miles of ownership.

No chance to do that with a used car. :yesnod

New cars are definitely a luxury, but they're nice. You dont have to guess about its history, and for the keep-and-hold crowd, like my stepdad with 310k on his 2004 Lexus, the initial depreciation is a non-issue.

I own all the cars I will need for now. I just need my musclecar when I get back and I'm done.

There are only 2 situations where I'd buy a brand new car.

1. I was in some sort of business where my flashy car was necessary to create and image.
2. I'm buying a performance car I plan to keep forever.

Performance cars get beat, period. If I wanted one that I was going to own and drive and never sell, I would want one that only I had ever driven. This is simply so I know it was getting beat by me, and not some damned idiot.

This.

I'm buying new for my next car. Helps to have it picked out all ready, but I don't like to trade in cars unless I have to. I like to drive 'em until they're junked. Only exception was when money was tight, and even then, I kept my car.

So, for me, the guy who drives 33,000 miles/year, depreciation is something I can't afford to care about, and unless I'm paying cash, I'd much prefer the lower APR's on new cars.

I'm also the type to hold onto cars until they die. But I purchase both new and used. Depends on the vehicle, which family member it's for and it's use.

I'm currently shopping for a small used car for my son and am also seeing car dealers trying to jack initial prices on small cars using the gas price argument. As a buyer I simply use the poor economy to counteract the gas price argument and offer cash. At the end of the day (and especially the month) the dealer is still pressured to make quotas, so I still expect to arrive at a reasonable price. If not, there's always another car/dealer to look at.

Considering my next purchase will be either a G37x or a CTS4, I'm fine with this.
